SolarCraft Brightens Bluerock Vineyards with Sustainable Solar Energy System in Alexander Valley

By harnessing the power of the sun, SolarCraft has provided Bluerock Vineyards with a state-of-the-art solar solution that not only reduces their environmental footprint but also enhances their operational efficiency by offsetting over 50% of their electrical use with clean, solar power. The new solar panel system, designed and installed by SolarCraft, encompasses 98 high-efficiency solar panels, mounted on the standing seem roof of Bluerock’s newly built barn and is designed to produce 65,000 kWh annually.

Bluerock was able to finance the solar installation through the Sonoma County Energy Independence Program (SCEIP), which is a property-assessed clean energy (PACE) financing. Through SCEIP financing, businesses like wineries in Sonoma County can access affordable funding for initiatives such as solar installations, fostering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to their operations.

The new solar panel installation is projected to offset 46 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) annually, equivalent to 11 cars taken off the road per year, 106 barrels of oil consumed, or carbon sequestered by 55 acres of trees in 1 year. By choosing solar power, the winery is actively participating in the global fight against climate change, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and environmental impact.

About Bluerock Vineyard
Dating back to 1880, the 100-acre Blue Rock estate tells the story of how European winemaking came to Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley. Italian immigrants brought with them olive trees, vine cuttings, and knowledge of grape growing. Acquired by Kenny and Cheryl Kahn in 1987, the Estate maintains much of its old world character. It even maintains its original olive trees that are now over 140 years old.

SolarCraft Completes Solar Power Installation at Heidrun Meadery

The solar photovoltaic system is ground mounted in a field north of the Winery residence. Comprised of (88) high-efficiency 380 watt solar panels, the solar array will produce over 46,000 kWh of clean, renewable power every year. This will offset 100% of Heidrun Meadery’s electrical needs, allowing their operations to run completely on solar power.

Along with world-class meadmaking, Heidrun has a beekeeping operation and a bee forage cultivation program, on which their honey wine depends. Their commitment to sustainability not only benefits the environment around them, but the community as whole.

“As with our efforts to create a biodiverse bee forage farmscape to provide habitat for pollinators and other critters in the wild, going 100% solar is in keeping with the meadery’s mission to develop a company that has a net beneficial impact on the environment,” said Heidrun owner Gordon Hull. “This solar array is a thrilling accomplishment for us!”

The new solar electric system will offset over 32 metric tons of carbon dioxide every year that would otherwise be emitted by fossil-fuel based utility power. This impact is equivalent to saving 76 barrels of oil, removing air pollution produced by over 82,000 miles of driving, or the pollutants removed by planting 40 acres of trees annually.

About Heidrun Meadery

In 1995 Gordon Hull, a geologist-turned-brewer, tried his hand at making sparkling wines from honey. What began as a casual experiment led to a singular fascination with the remarkable variability of flower nectar and, subsequently, to the formation of Heidrun Meadery. Heiðrun is producing a mead that is unlike an other: a sparkling mead produced in the French Méthode Champenoise tradition. The winery includes a commercial beekeeping operation, experimentation in the cultivation of bee-friendly, high-yield nectar crops and an extraordinary travel destination for worldly enthusiasts of wine, nature and conviviality.

SolarCraft Completes Solar Power Installation for Oakmont Village Association

Novato and Sonoma based SolarCraft, recently completed the installation of three individual solar electric systems at Oakmont Village Association (OVA) in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, CA. Increasing the sustainability of their operations and reducing their power costs, installing these solar photovoltaic systems will save Oakmont hundreds of thousands in utility fees over the life of the solar power system.

SolarCraft Completes Solar Power Installation for Oakmont Village Association - Santa Rosa Community Saves with Solar

SolarCraft engineered and installed three separate solar power systems powering OVA’s three spacious recreation centers: Central Activity Center, West Recreation Center and East Recreation Center. The solar panels are mounted on custom-engineered MBL solar carport canopies that provides shade to member and visitor vehicles.

Oakmont Village Association has been working diligently on its resiliency plan to address not only wildfire preparation but also rising PG&E costs due to the recent North Bay fires. OVA’s planning has resulted in locking in lower electricity costs with clean, renewable solar energy just before PG&E announced a rate increase between 3% to 8% for grid-delivered electricity this March.

The Central Activity Center, which includes the Berger Center Auditorium, is powered by the largest of the three systems at 243.96 kW, generating over 333,000 kWh every year and offsetting over 94% of the facility’s electrical usage. An 88.92 kW system powers the East Recreation Center, generating over 120,000 kWh annually and offsets over 96% of the facility’s electrical usage. The West Recreation Center carport holds a 77.52 kW system which generates over 110,000 kWh yearly, offsetting over 94% of the electrical usage of the West Rec Center. The vast majority of Oakmont Village Association’s recreational facilities are now powered by clean, renewable solar power.

“SolarCraft runs a clean operation and has a great reputation,” said Iris Harrell, Building Construction Committee at OVA. “They have the ability to make good things happen…for us and the planet!”

The solar system is financed with a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) from Tritec Americas, meaning that OVA did not have to pay any upfront solar system costs during design or installation. The PPA takes care of all system costs, operations and maintenance and insurance for 25 years. OVA simply buys the electricity produced by the solar carports at a much reduced rate compared to the electricity generated by PG&E and consumed from their grid.

With over 410 kW of solar power installed, OVA is saving $10,900 annually in utility fees. The combined systems provide 563,000 kWh of clean, sustainable power annually, offsetting 1,694,953 lbs. of carbon dioxide every year that would otherwise be emitted by fossil-fuel based utility power. This impact over the next 25 years is equivalent to saving 1,232 barrels of oil, removing air pollution produced by over 24 million miles of driving, or the pollutants removed by planting 451 acres of trees annually.
