NTPC invites EOI to produce torrefied biomass pellets from Startups

NTPC Ltd has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) to produce torrefied biomass pellets from Indian startups.

Through its R&D wing, NETRA, NTPC intends to provide a platform to Indian startups to enable them to develop advanced technology for producing torrefied biomass pellets that are well-suited for decentralized small-scale users. The last date of submission of the proposals titled, “Torrefied Pellet Manufacturing Plant for Agri-Waste” is 19th May 2022.

India produces an estimated 230 MMTA of biomass that is either wasted or burnt. Biomass co-firing in power plants has proven to be a major solution to cater to this menace thereby reducing carbon footprint in the environment. NTPC has been the pioneer in co-firing Biomass in its coal-fired power plants. Since the adoption of co-firing, NTPC has been continuously engaged in strengthening the entire Biomass sector value chain in various dimensions. Many of the NTPC plants have already started the requisite co-firing of biomass pellets with coal. Long-term procurement action has also been initiated for many plants.

Till now, the focus has been centred mainly on non-torrefied biomass pellets. However, for bulk utilization of biomass,  torrefied biomass pellet production needs to be given importance, as torrefied biomass pellet has more energy density, and its characteristics are closer to coal. Further, torrefied biomass pellets will reduce average transportation costs.  Currently, the technology for torrefied pellets is still in the nascent stage of development.

The Union Ministry of Power has set up the National Mission for the use of Biomass in thermal power plants (Mission SAMARTH) and has mandated 5-10 percent co-firing of Biomass in all coal-fired thermal power plants in the country. Biomass co-firing in power plants has also been included in the Union Budget speech-2022 as an important tool for carbon reduction and income generation for the farmers.

The move by NTPC is expected to reinforce NTPC’s commitment towards developing the biomass ecosystem in the country and will provide a unique platform for the Indian startups to fulfill the Prime Minister’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat and also contribute towards the ambitious Make in India movement.

Anheuser-Busch to Produce New Brew Inspired by Ukraine’s Most Loved Beer Brand Chernigivske, With Profits Supporting Humanitarian Relief Efforts

Today Anheuser-Busch is announcing it will join AB InBev teams around the world to launch a new initiative aimed at providing humanitarian relief for those impacted by the crisis in Ukraine. Taking inspiration from beloved Ukrainian beer and A-B sister brand Chernigivske, the brewer will introduce a tribute to Chernigivske in select cities across the U.S., with its profits going to the CARE® Ukraine Crisis Fund.

Chernigivske will be produced at Anheuser-Busch’s Newark, New Jersey brewery and will be available on draught in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix beginning in May. New Chernigivske-inspired beers will also be introduced by AB InBev affiliates in Canada and Colombia, and as previously announced in the UK and eight other markets across Europe, with profits going toward Ukrainian humanitarian relief.

As part of this global initiative, AB InBev will donate a minimum of $5 million to humanitarian aid organizations in the region, including the CARE® Ukraine Crisis Fund. CARE® is a leading non-profit that is providing essential relief services to Ukrainian refugees and others impacted by the conflict. Anheuser-Busch will also make it easy for consumers to donate directly to CARE® through a dedicated website as well as through QR codes included in on-trade materials.

This commitment builds on the company’s global efforts to date, which include providing critical assistance to its 1,800 employees and their families in Ukraine, the donation of two million cans of emergency drinking water, and partnerships with other companies and non-profits providing food, blankets, and medical supplies to Ukraine and surrounding refugee relief areas.

Chernigivske, which is part of AB InBev’s global portfolio of brands, is named after the city Chernihiv and has been brewed in Ukraine since 1988. Since its inception, the brand has celebrated Ukraine’s history, culture, and people – exactly what the company aims to do now. The crisp European-style lager, brewed domestically in the U.S., will be made in the style of Chernigivske’s original recipe.

Belair Produce Enhances Technology with Transition to Produce Pro Software

Family owned and operated since 1910, Belair Produce understands their success depends upon the loyalty of their customers. This commitment has been the bedrock of their business for over 100 years. With increased demands throughout the industry, especially during the pandemic, Belair Produce knew they had to embrace new technology in order to scale, grow and operate as efficiently as possible while continuing to make an impact with customers.

When it came time to choose a new ERP software system, Belair Produce looked at multiple options, but, ultimately, it came down to the people.

“It wasn’t just about the software for us, it was about the people behind the software. And, the support from Produce Pro really stood out from our initial conversations,” said Chad Berman, President, Belair Produce. “The Produce Pro staff took extra time to learn about our operation, helped make us better, and ensured we were prepared for our live week. You have to put in the work, but it pays out tenfold and made us so much more comfortable with this transition.”

“We’re not just a software company. It’s the knowledge of our people that help make our customers successful. Belair Produce saw that in us, and we are thrilled to have started this working relationship with them,” said Dave Donat, President, Produce Pro Software.

The Produce Pro system is able to provide a real time snapshot of inventory and financial information in order to see how well an operation is performing, which results in better efficiency and less mistakes.

“We also needed a software system to help improve our inventory accuracy and provide more visibility into every aspect of our business. In the past, we tried our best, but it had become very manual and labor intensive,” added Berman. “With Produce Pro, we can see how our company is doing at any given moment and make better decisions because of it. Plus, we can access the system anytime and anywhere, which was a huge benefit working remotely these past several months.”

Belair Produce has been running the Produce Pro system since early 2021. They found that in the midst of a pandemic having a heightened use of technology has been a win-win for themselves as well as their customers. Online ordering has improved customer service levels and increased orders. Their staff has been held more accountable. Mistakes are down, and inventory is accurate.

Berman mentioned, “With what little free time we have working in the produce business, the software system frees up a bunch of it for us. It’s so much easier to do business now, and we can do almost anything with a click of a button.”

“Produce Pro makes running a business better. Providing us with a solid foundation, as we continue to rebuild and grow, we are now running a more efficient and profitable business. I could not be happier,” concluded Berman.
