Japan – MHIENG Establishes Branch Office in Canada Focused on Decarbonization Business

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd. (MHIENG), a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group company, has newly established a branch office in western Canada to conduct business relating to decarbonization. Located in Calgary in the province of Alberta, the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering Calgary Branch Office will enhance the company’s presence in the region by performing timely operations to introduce its carbon capture technologies, a field in which MHIENG holds a top global market share. Establishment of the new branch office is part of MHI Group’s energy transition program integrating its comprehensive expertise in carbon capture.
Canada is highly proactive in pursuing environmental protection and is a promising market for Carbon dioxide Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) advancement. In 2019, the country introduced a federal carbon tax, with plans calling for progressive tax increases through 2030.

Further, multiple subsidy programs have been launched on the provincial level to support CCUS projects. Numerous potential projects are currently being studied across the country, namely Alberta and Saskatchewan province, concurrently with development of CCUS infrastructure including transportation and storage.

MHIENG’s new branch office in Canada will further enable MHI Group to respond swiftly to local market trends and customer needs. MHI Group also bolsters the sales capabilities of the other regional departments that are in charge of advancing the decarbonization business in the US (MHIA) and Europe (Decarbonization Business Department, MHI-EMEA, established July 2021).
MHI Group is currently strengthening its position in the Energy Transition, and the development of a CO2 solutions ecosystem is a core component of that initiative. CCUS is garnering attention as an effective means for realizing a carbon neutral society.

Supporting the group’s strategy on the Energy Transition, MHIENG, as a leading company in the decarbonization area, will continue to help achieve wide-scale greenhouse gas emission reduction by introducing its high-performance CO2 capture technology globally. It will also press ahead in developing new proprietary technologies to contribute to global environment protection.

Japan – MHIENG to License Carbon Capture Technology for Natural Gas Plant in Italy

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd. (MHIENG), a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group company based in Yokohama, has agreed to license its carbon capture technology and provide the process design package (PDP) for the foreseen phase 1 of Italy’s first CCUS (Carbon dioxide Capture, Utilization and Storage) project being developed by Eni S.p.A., the biggest integrated energy company in Italy. The phase 1 of the project targets the capture of approximately 25,000 tons of CO2 per year from the turbo compressor exhaust operating at Eni’s natural gas plant located in Casalborsetti (Ravenna), in Northeast Italy.

MHIENG’s role in the project will be to provide licensing for its carbon capture technology, the KM CDR Process, jointly developed with The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., which is a technology that captures the CO2 contained in flue gas by a process of chemical absorption using MHIENG’s proprietary KS-1 solvent. This system has already been deployed at 13 commercial facilities around the world, where its high reliability has been confirmed by solid track records. MHIENG will provide its carbon capture technology through NextChem S.p.A., green chemistry-dedicated subsidiary of Marie Tecnimont Group, a leading Italian engineering company engaged in the transformation of natural resource as well as in industrializing technologies to support the energy transition.

The new agreement marks MHIENG’s first provision of its carbon capture technology to Italy and has extreme significance in terms of enhancing its presence in Europe. It will also serve as a springboard for MHI Group as a whole, with MHIENG continuing to work in alliance with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries EMEA, Ltd. (MHI-EMEA) – MHI’s regional headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa – to respond to demand in Italy and throughout Europe to advance the energy transition and achieve a carbon neutral society.

MHI Group is currently strengthening its position in the energy transition, and development of a CO2 ecosystem is a core component of that initiative. CCUS is garnering attention as an effective means for realizing a carbon neutral society. Going forward, MHIENG will continue to contribute toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale by promoting broad adoption of high-performance CO2 capture technology worldwide. It will also press ahead in developing new proprietary technologies to protect the global environment.

Japan – MHIENG Receives Order for Project to Enhance Capacity of Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit System in Singapore

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd. (MHIENG), a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has received an order from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore to enhance the transport capacity of the Automated Guideway Transit(1) (AGT) system used on the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit (LRT(2)) lines that were originally supplied by MHI in 2003. The order for the project was received jointly with MHI’s regional subsidiary Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MHI-AP) and Mitsubishi Corporation (MC).

Sengkang Punggol LRT

The Sengkang-Punggol LRT system connects two stations on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) North East Line (Sengkang Station and Punggol Station) to their residential areas. The transport capacity of the LRT system will be expanded to accommodate its increased use in the fast-growing Sengkang and Punggol districts. MHIENG and MHI-AP will supply 17 new two-car trainsets (34 cars), signaling system, guideway system and vehicle maintenance equipment for the expansion of the existing rolling stock yard.

“Since delivering the vehicles and system to inaugurate Singapore’s Sengkang-Punggol LRT system in 2003, we have continued to support LTA by enhancing the system’s transport capacity and providing a wide range of after-sales services. These include supply of additional vehicles to accommodate two-car linked operations and upgrade of the rolling stock workshop,” Kenji Terasawa, President and CEO of MHIENG said. “We look forward to building upon our long-standing relationship with LTA through this expansion project that will help meet growing demand while continuing to ensure reliable transportation.”

MHIENG will coordinate with its Singapore-based Technical Service Center, which was established within MHI-AP in April 2021, to provide more localized services. Through close cooperation with the company, MHIENG aims to provide long-term technical support, supply of spare parts, and other types of high value-added localized services to better meet customer needs. A hub for MHI’s transportation service business in Asia Pacific, the Technical Service Center provides a “one-stop service” to respond to customer inquiries and requests in a timely manner and strengthens MHI’s transportation system product operations, maintenance, and after-sales structure in the region.

MHI Group draws on its extensive experience delivering AGT systems around the world, including Singapore’s Changi Airport Skytrain(APM(3)) and systems in Japan, the U.S., Dubai and Macau, as well as its high-quality operations, maintenance, and after-sales services to maintain a competitive position in the global market for new transportation systems. MHI will continue supplying safe and low-carbon transport solutions that will help support economic development and provide better convenience to people in Singapore and countries around the world.

(1) An Automated Guideway Transit system operates fully automatically on electric power. Use of rubber tires results in a smooth and quiet ride.
(2) Conventionally, LRT is used as the abbreviation of “Light Rail Transit,” but in the case of Singapore’s Sengkang-Punggol LRT, the “R” refers to “Rapid” in accordance with that network’s high-speed operation.
(3) An APM is an AGT serving an airport. APMs link terminals or connect airports with their nearby auxiliary facilities. They are adopted at airports worldwide.
