Husson University’s July Summer Camps Offer Students the Opportunity to Explore Healthcare and Pharmacy

Two different science-oriented camps being held at Husson University this July will give high school students the opportunity to explore careers in pharmacy and healthcare. Sponsored by Husson University’s College of Health and Pharmacy, these camps are an outstanding way for students to better understand what it means to work in different professions.

“Husson University’s summer camps offer young people the opportunity to explore career paths in a safe and nurturing environment,” said Dr. James D. Nash, dean of the College of Health and Pharmacy.

On July 17 – 19, the University will be hosting a three-day overnight Pharmacy Summer Camp. Students will learn about laboratory skills, compounding, patient counseling, hospital pharmacy and other careers. Sponsored by Husson’s School of Pharmacy and Hannaford, students will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the University’s laboratories. Enrollment in this camp is limited to 20 students.

To be eligible to participate in Pharmacy camp, high school students must be junior or seniors during the 2023-2024 academic year. Students must also have a minimum 2.75 grade point average (GPA) and an interest in pharmacy as a career. Students and parents who want to learn more should call Elizabeth Roboul at 207.941.7163 or email her at roboule@husson.edu. More information is also available on Husson University’s website at https://www.husson.edu/pharmacy/pharmacy-summer-camp/.

Nine days after Pharmacy Summer Camp concludes, Husson University will be the site of Health Professions Summer Camp 2023. Open to all students entering their first, sophomore, junior or senior year of high school, this camp provides teens with the opportunity to be introduced to a wide range of healthcare careers. Potential career paths open to exploration include nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy and medicine. Students can also pick up additional information about degree programs in psychology, graduate counseling, health sciences, healthcare administration and public health, and master’s degrees in healthcare management while they are on Husson University’s campus.

During this one-day camp experience, high school students will work with Husson University faculty, current Husson students and Walgreens representatives. Student campers will also be able to tour Husson University’s state-of-the-art science laboratories. Walgreens is generously covering all costs associated with this year’s Health Professions Camp. There is no cost to participating campers.

Students interested in enrolling in Health Professions Summer Camp 2023, should complete the online form located at https://admissions.husson.edu/register/hp_day_camp. Anyone with questions can call Elizabeth Roboul at 207-941-7163 or email her at roboule@husson.edu.

The ‘70s and ‘80s Live Again at Husson University’s Gracie Theatre

Pull out your bell bottoms and spray your hair so it stands up high. The Classic Rock Orchestra will be performing on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. at Husson University’s Gracie Theatre. This eleven-piece orchestra will be performing legendary and nostalgic anthems from the ‘70s and ‘80s including a variety of rock anthems from such notable artists as Fleetwood Mac, Journey, The Beatles, Heart, Pat Benatar, and many more.

“This concert is the perfect combination of nostalgia and rock ‘n’ roll classics,” said Jeri Misler, managing artistic director of the Gracie Theatre. “The band is tastefully balanced with extraordinary singers, a big band sound, and some of the finest orchestrations found anywhere.”

Famous composer Robert Moody said, “The Classic Rock Orchestra is, quite simply, one of the finest pop bands available today. The music of groups like Kansas, Journey, and Boston is now coming into its own as a hallmark of nostalgia for multiple generations of pop enthusiasts. Attending the concert is a great way to sing all your favorite songs at the top of your lungs.”

The show is conceived by the creative team of orchestrator Chris Eastburn and singer/multi-instrumentalist Joe Boucher who brought “Piano Men – The Music of Elton and Billy” to the stage. “Piano Men” has been playing to sold out audiences with symphony orchestras across the United States since 2011.

Band members include vocalists Susie Pepper and Johnny Martinez as well as Joe Boucher on the piano and guitar. Boucher also provides vocals. Chris Eastburn handles the orchestrations and the bass guitar, with Gary Backstrom on guitar and Steve Hodgkin on drums. The band receives additional orchestration from musicians with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Ticket prices range from $32.00-$42.00, depending on seat selection. They can be purchased online at gracietheatre.com or by calling the box office at 207-941-7888. Groups of eight or more are entitled to a 10% discount.

For patrons who would like to put together a customized package of multiple shows, The Gracie’s “You Pick 4” season tickets include premium seats for at least four shows of the purchaser’s choice at a special discounted price. The premium seats located in the orchestra section are available for a limited time. Patrons can purchase tickets for the “You Pick 4” plan now through February 23.

Husson University, the Caleb Group and Harbor Management to Provide 35% More Thanksgiving Dinners to the Elderly and the Disabled This Year

For the third consecutive year, Husson University is partnering with the Caleb Group and Harbor Management to prepare and deliver Thanksgiving meals to Bangor area seniors and disabled community members. The increased cost of food for those on a fixed income who need a hot, delicious holiday meal is making this effort more imperative this year.

“The Caleb Group and Harbor Management received more inquiries this year about providing Thanksgiving dinner than ever before,” said Bob Sedgwick, the director of dining services at Husson University. “I’m delighted to let everyone know that our dining services team will be working on Thanksgiving to prepare these meals so that those in need can enjoy a sumptuous holiday meal with turkey, all the fixings and our famous Husson homemade desserts.”

Making this happen will require Husson University’s Dining Services team to prepare nearly 150 Thanksgiving meals for local elderly and disabled residents at Bradford Commons and Kenduskeag Terrace in Bangor. That’s an increase of over 35% in the total number of meals prepared, compared to the prior year.

Both facilities are owned by The Caleb Group and managed by Harbor Management. The meal assembly will take place from 10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 24, 2022) in the kitchens of the Dickerman Dining Center on Husson University’s campus at 116 Kagan Drive.

The Dining Services team at the University helping to prepare these meals includes Husson University Executive Chef Shawn Joyce and Sous Chef Shawn Stemp. Assisting the chefs in the preparation of the Thanksgiving meals will be Sedgwick; Purchaser Julie Perkins, Assistant to the Director of Dining Services Carole Bemis and Husson student Rowan Lamoureux, a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biology with a concentration in biochemistry at the University’s College of Science and Humanities. She is also the secretary of the African Student Association and the secretary of the Neurodiversity Club.

The 149 completed meals will be picked up by Laurie Holmes, the resident services coordinator for the Caleb Group and her husband at 11:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 24, 2022). The meals will then be immediately delivered to elderly and disabled residents at Bradford Commons and Kenduskeag Terrace. Holmes and Kim Scheid, the property manager for both properties, are coordinating the delivery effort. This initiative couldn’t be timelier. Thanksgiving meals are more expensive this year. Americans on fixed incomes feel the economic pinch the most.
