“The 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections will be remembered forever. People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday as counting trends showed the Bharatiya Janata Party surging past the majority mark in the 294-seat West Bengal assembly, set to end over a decade of Trinamool Congress rule and deliver the party its first-ever government in the state.

Modi credited the result to the party’s grassroots workers. “BJP’s record win in West Bengal would not be possible without the efforts and struggles of countless Karyakartas over generations. I salute them all.
For years, they have worked hard on the ground, overcome all sorts of adversities and spoken about our development agenda. They are the strength of our Party,” he said.
As of late afternoon, the BJP had won 9 seats and was leading in 189, while the TMC had won 1 seat and was ahead in 88. Counting was underway in 293 of the 294 constituencies after the Election Commission ordered a re-poll in the Falta seat in South 24 Parganas.
Modi had mounted a high-intensity campaign in the state, addressing 19 rallies over 22 days in the run-up to polling.
Mamata Banerjee, however, was reported to be leading in her home constituency of Bhabanipur against Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition and a key face of BJP’s Bengal campaign.

The BJP’s sweep in Bengal came alongside a strong performance in Assam, where the party-led NDA retained power. The NDA secured leads in 98 of 126 constituencies, with the BJP alone ahead in 78 seats. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was leading in his Jalukbari constituency. Assam recorded a voter turnout of 85.96 per cent.
“The BJP-NDA’s win in the Assam Vidhan Sabha elections illustrates the unwavering support for our Alliance’s emphasis on development and bringing a positive difference in people’s lives. I thank my sisters and brothers of Assam for the resounding mandate,” Modi added.
