Guwahati: Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) chief Hagrama Mohilary’s wife, Sewli Mohilary, is eyeing a ministerial berth in the NDA government in Assam.

Sewli Mohilary, a first-time MLA from Kokrajhar, is among the frontrunners from the BPF ahead of the NDA government’s swearing-in ceremony on May 12.

A senior BJP leader, requesting anonymity, said, “BPF is likely to get one ministerial berth in the council of ministers. Similarly, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is likely to get one ministerial berth. Along with the chief minister, one minister each from BPF and AGP will take oath on May 12.”

The leader added that allies had received two berths each in earlier governments. “In 2016, AGP got two berths. In 2021, AGP again got two berths. United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), which was then a BJP ally, also got two berths. This time BJP has secured a massive mandate and several BJP leaders need to be accommodated,” he said.

The council of ministers in Assam can have a maximum of 18 members, including the chief minister.

From 60 seats in 2021, the BJP increased its tally to 82 in the 126-member Assembly this time, while the NDA won 102 seats overall. Both AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.

Speaking to reporters, Sewli Mohilary said she was keen to become a minister. “As a minister, I will be able to do more work for the people,” she said.

The BPF had denied a ticket to former minister Pramila Rani Brahma and fielded Sewli Mohilary from Kokrajhar.
