Reducing emissions from the transportation sector is critical to achieving Canada’s climate targets and keeping our air clean. That’s why the Government of Canada is making it easier for Canadians to purchase, charge and drive electric vehicles (EVs) in Ontario and across the country.

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister Responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, on behalf of Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, announced a $500,000 investment in the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Inc. to help support the installation of up to 63 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across Ontario.

This investment, which will make EV charging more accessible to all, will be funded through the Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).

Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Inc. will select recipients through a transparent process, based on demand. All EV chargers will be installed in public places, multi-unit residential buildings, on streets, at workplaces or facilities for servicing light-duty vehicle fleets by March 2023.

Since 2015, Canada has invested a historic $1 billion to make EVs more affordable and chargers more accessible for Canadians. These investments are supporting the establishment of a coast-to-coast network of chargers in local areas where Canadians live, work and play, while federal rebates of up to $5,000 are helping more Canadians make the switch to an EV.

These investments are yet another step in reaching Canada’s target of ensuring all new passenger vehicles sold in Canada are zero-emission by 2035. And just like investments in everything from clean technology to nature protection, today’s announcement is part of Canada’s ambitious climate change goals that build a cleaner, healthier, and affordable future for all Canadians.

“We’re making electric vehicles more affordable and charging more accessible for Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Investing in more EV chargers, like the ones announced today in Ontario, will put more Canadians in the driver’s seat on the road to a net-zero future, and help achieve our climate goals.”

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson

Minister of Natural Resources

“The CEDC is excited to bring more electric vehicle charging stations to the City and encourage the usage of smart technology in the transportation sector. Plug in Thunder Bay will support business owners, property owners, our academic institutions, indigenous groups and institutions, and many others cover up to 50% of costs to purchase and install EV charging stations. Through this funding, CEDC has the opportunity to support $1 million in electric vehicle infrastructure locally.”

Canada – New EV Chargers Coming to Alberta

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today a $2-million investment to Alberta Municipalities to help support the deployment and installation of up to 260 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across Alberta.

January 18, 2022                       Edmonton, Alberta                               Natural Resources Canada

Reducing emissions from the transportation sector is critical to Canada achieving its climate targets. That’s why the Government of Canada is making it easier for Canadians to purchase and drive electric vehicles (EV) in Alberta.

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today a $2-million investment to Alberta Municipalities to support the installation of up to 260 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across Alberta through their Municipal Climate Change Action Centre. The Action Centre is a collaborative initiative of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the Government of Alberta.

This investment, which will make purchasing EV chargers more accessible for municipalities, will be funded through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).

The Action Centre will select recipients through a transparent process, based on demand. After which, EV chargers will be installed in public places, on streets locations, at recreation centres and other municipal-owned facilities for charging light-duty vehicles.

Since 2015, Canada has invested a historic $1 billion to make EVs more affordable and chargers more accessible for Canadians. These investments are supporting the establishment of a coast-to-coast network of fast chargers; installing chargers in local areas where Canadians live, work and play; and providing rebates of up to $5,000 to help more Canadians buy EVs.

These investments support Canada’s target of ensuring all passenger vehicles sold in Canada are zero-emission by 2035 and are critical to achieving Canada’s ambitious climate change goals and building a cleaner, healthier future for all Canadians.

“We’re making electric vehicles more affordable and accessible for Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Investing in more charging stations like the ones announced today in Alberta will allow more Canadians to be in the driver’s seat on the road to a net-zero future and help achieve our climate goals.”

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson

Minister of Natural Resources

“The Government of Canada is committed to the protection of our environment and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicles are an important part of our work to meet Canada’s climate targets. Today’s announcement solidifies that commitment by building on our government’s plan to provide clean and sustainable transportation options to the people in Alberta.”

The Honourable Randy Boissonnault

Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre

“The Electric Vehicle Charging Program will help forward-thinking municipalities get ready for an electric future. With this investment from the Government of Canada, our members can put their communities on the EV charging station map at no cost to their taxpayers.”

Paul McLauchlin

President, Rural Municipalities of Alberta

“We are thrilled to support the Action Centre and the Electric Vehicle Charging Program. With one or two new EV charging stations, communities can see an increased economic boost and get closer to achieving their environmental and sustainability goals. With new EV charging stations, residents and visitors can charge their vehicles while at the recreation centre, library or even on main street while they shop, dine and explore.”

Cathy Heron

President, Alberta Municipalities

“We are proud to lead the charge in the largest investment in EV charging stations in Alberta to date. The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is poised to support all Alberta municipalities — large and small — to prepare for the increased demand for EV charging infrastructure. This initiative supports our mandate to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions and enable community resilience.”

The Government of Canada is making it easier for Canadians to drive electric — transforming the way Canadians get to where they need to go.

Today, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan Jr., Minister of Natural Resources, announced a $99,900 investment to ERTH Corp to install 21 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the province to put Canadians in the driver’s seat on the road to a net-zero future. ERTH Corp is also contributing $236,946 toward this initiative, bringing the total project cost to $336,846.

Funded through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, all chargers are installed and available for public use.

Since 2015, Canada has made a historic investment of over $1 billion so far to make EVs more affordable and charging infrastructure more locally accessible. These investments are building a coast-to-coast network of fast chargers and installing chargers in local areas where Canadians live, work and play. The government also provides incentives of up to $5,000 to help Canadians buy EVs and full tax write-offs for businesses purchasing them.

These investments support Canada’s new mandatory target of 100-percent zero-emission light-duty vehicle sales by 2035. Driving down transportation emissions is critical to achieving Canada’s ambitious climate change targets and requires a combination of investments and regulations to support Canadians and industry in this transition.

The government supports green infrastructure projects that create good, middle-class jobs and get us to net-zero emissions by 2050.

“We’re giving Canadians the greener options they want to get to where they need to go. We’re building a coast-to-coast network of electric vehicle charging stations from St. John’s to Victoria, and now we’re building more right here in Ontario. This is how we get to net zero by 2050.”

The Honourable Seamus O’Regan Jr.

Minister of Natural Resources

“ERTH Corporation and our municipal partners are committed to installing a public charging infrastructure necessary to support the widespread use of EVs in our communities. The federal funding provided through Natural Resources Canada’s ZEVIP to install 21 EV chargers has been critical to achieving this important commitment.”
