IKEA U.S. goes West with two new planning studios opening in Los Angeles, California

Introducing the IKEA Planning Studio: a new kind of IKEA store for Los Angeles. The IKEA Planning Studio is where expertise meets convenience. This August, customers can visit the new IKEA in Arcadia or Long Beach to chat with a design expert. Whether planning a big project or in need of the perfect piece for a space – or just a dose of free inspiration.

Los Angeles, CA – WEBWIRE

On August 29th and 31st, Long Beach and Arcadia are officially home to IKEA U.S. new store formats—a celebratory moment for the city of Los Angeles

On August 29th at 10 am PST, IKEA U.S. will cut the ribbon for the grand opening of IKEA Long Beach, a new planning studio in the Long Beach Towne Center. The excitement continues two days later when IKEA Arcadia opens its doors in the Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall on August 31st. IKEA U.S. announced its plans for the two new planning studios in the Los Angeles area in October of 2021 and the anticipation is finally over. The new Los Angeles touchpoints will focus on providing inspiration and smart home solutions for city living as IKEA continues to transform to better meet the needs of California customers.

L.A. residents can look forward to increased access to IKEA in the city as the two centrally located planning studios join four full-size IKEA stores in the greater Los Angeles market. The two new locations are the first IKEA planning studios on the West Coast. By creating convenient ways to shop and helping to eliminate the classic frustration of L.A. traffic with two new IKEA locations, customers will be able to focus on their favorite home projects at each new planning studio. IKEA customers will be able to book appointments and get support from design specialists with planning and ordering home furnishing solutions that require a bit more help – such as kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. While customers are unable to take home any products on their shopping day, the IKEA team will make sure that everything a customer orders is transported to their home or to another convenient point of delivery. The concept for these studios is based on extensive market research to understand consumers, what logistical barriers they face, how they like to shop, how they live at home, and more.

“The new IKEA planning studios offer a unique experience with convenience in mind, and they are tailored for L.A. living. IKEA is consistently transforming to better meet the needs of our customers in California and beyond,” said Javier Quiñones, CEO & Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA U.S. “We don’t want to stop pushing the envelope when it comes to accessibility and affordability. IKEA is strongly committed to the communities in which we operate.  We look forward to being a good partner to both Long Beach and Arcadia, and to welcoming its residents as part of the IKEA experience.”

Grand Opening Day

Just before 10 am PST on August 29th, IKEA Long Beach will host co-workers, city officials and mall customers for a short ribbon cutting ceremony and the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition from the city of Long Beach. This will take place on site at the Long Beach Towne Center at 7611 Carson Blvd, in 8000 sq. feet of leased space. IKEA Arcadia will do the same at 10 am PST on August 31st at the Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall at 400 S. Baldwin Avenue, in 9092 sq. feet of leased space. On each grand opening day, IKEA customers can enjoy games, workshops, giveaways, and the opportunity to become IKEA Family Members for more exclusive perks throughout the day.

“The all-new Planning Studios in Arcadia and Long Beach will allow customers to meet with professional consultants who can help them optimize their living space,” said Gustavo Tinajero, Greater Los Angeles Market Area Manager at IKEA U.S. “With full-service delivery, this is a new, intimate experience that’s uniquely IKEA and uniquely L.A. We are thrilled to be opening the first IKEA planning studios on the West Coast, continuing to create customer meeting points that are more accessible and convenient to the many people of the L.A. market while continuing to offer smart and affordable home solutions.”

In addition to opening new store formats in city centers, IKEA has made significant investments to enhance its e-commerce experience and service offerings, including new lower priced shipping & delivery, Click & Collect, and TaskRabbit assembly services.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals costumes to debut at Smithsonian’s “FUTURES” Nov. 20

An insider look at Marvel Studios’ newest film Eternals will debut Nov. 20 as part of the groundbreaking new Smithsonian “FUTURES” exhibition at the historic Arts and Industries Building (AIB). Exploring new evolutions in storytelling and world-building, the display will feature five original costumes from the movie and new behind-the-scenes details of how new technologies are enhancing the ability of cinema to illustrate new futures.

On view through July 2022, “FUTURES” will be the first major building-wide exploration of the future on the National Mall and will temporarily reopen America’s oldest national museum for the first time in nearly two decades. The part-exhibition, part-festival will celebrate the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary with more than more than 150 objects, ideas, prototypes and installations that fuse art, technology, design and history to help imagine possible futures on the horizon.

Eternals is the newest storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, originally a futuristic comic book series created and written in 1976 by the legendary Jack Kirby and now brought vividly to life by Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao. The epic story, spanning thousands of years, features a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, the Deviants, to fight for the future.

“Since comics first came to prominence in the U.S. in the 1930s, they’ve flourished as an exciting new form of storytelling featuring entire universes with their own languages, cultures, people, heroines and places,” said Ashley Molese, curator at AIB. “Leaping from comic page to the screen, Marvel has helped create a whole new experience of world-building and future casting. ‘Eternals’ takes some radical approaches to filmmaking by playing with scale and visual effects in ways never seen before in the MCU, time traveling through humanity’s earliest civilizations to beyond the cosmos.”

Visitors will be able to come face to face with original costumes of Sersi (Gemma Chan), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Druig (Barry Keoghan) and Ikaris (Richard Madden) within the exhibition’s Futures that Inspire hall, a space designed to explore leaps of imagination. Exclusive behind-the-scenes content will look at the evolution from sketch on paper to visual effects to finished film. A new cinematic augmented-reality experience, also available via iOS app, will introduce a technique of immersive storytelling that invites visitors to discover new interactive movie-like worlds.

“We share stories as a way to imagine endless other possibilities and to more fully understand others’ visions for the future,” said Rachel Goslins, director of AIB. “‘FUTURES’ is designed to help us push beyond what we think we may know. The ability to imagine new worlds in a way that feels emotional and real is a powerful tool to bring new visions to life.”

The Eternals display joins other comic and science-fiction inspired artwork that showcase the visual language and cultural creative power of future world-building, including a new comic concept for “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” by Native American artist Jeffrey Veregge, the typewriter of science fiction visionary Octavia Butler, an Afrofuturism-inspired artwork set in an imagined Black utopia in “Cosmic Listening” by Stacey Robinson, the award-winning video game “Never Alone” that transforms the oral storytelling tradition of the Iñupiat tribe into a beautifully realized playable adventure, a seminal painting by 1960s space art visionary Chesley Bonestell, new promotional posters of speculative Smithsonian exhibitions debuting in the year 2071 by artist Brian Miller and more.

“It’s exciting to see Eternals costumes on display at the Smithsonian in this new FUTURES exhibit,” said Nate Moore, who, along with Kevin Feige, is the producer of the film. “Imagination, storytelling and world-building form the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and these costumes are great examples of that. Immense thought and detail went into their design, created by Ryan Meinerding and his visual development team and costume designer Sammy Sheldon Differ, and we hope visitors will find themselves transported into the world of Jack Kirby and the Eternals while viewing them.”

About “FUTURES”

“FUTURES” is the Smithsonian’s first major building-wide exploration of the future and will temporarily reopen its oldest museum for the first time in nearly two decades. The part-exhibition, part-festival, designed by award-winning architecture firm Rockwell Group, will celebrate the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary with more than 150 awe-inspiring objects, ideas, prototypes and installations that fuse art, technology, design and history to help visitors imagine many possible futures on the horizon. A digital “FUTURES” Guide by award-winning firm Goodby Silverstein & Partners will launch early 2022.
On view Nov. 20 through July 6, 2022, “FUTURES” will be open every day except Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission will be free, and no timed tickets are currently required. For more information and to plan a visit, the public can go to aib.si.edu.

“FUTURES” is made possible by a select group of sponsors and supporters: Amazon Web Services, Autodesk, Bell Textron Inc., Jacqueline B. Mars, John and Adrienne Mars, the Embassy of the State of Qatar, David M. Rubenstein, and SoftBank Group. Major support is also provided by the Annenberg Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Kevin S. Bright and Claudia W. Bright, and Robert Kogod. Additional funding is provided by Accenture, John Brock III, Events DC, First Solar, Ford Motor Company, Wendy Dayton, Charlie and Nancy Hogan, the Suzanne Nora Johnson and David Johnson Foundation, Lyda Hill Philanthropies, MedWand Solutions, National Football League, the National Football Players Association and Oracle.

About the Arts and Industries Building

The Arts and Industries Building (AIB) opened in 1881 as the country’s first National Museum, an architectural icon in the heart of the National Mall. Its soaring halls introduced millions of Americans to wonders about to change the world—Edison’s lightbulb, the first telephone, Apollo rockets. Dubbed “Palace of Wonders” and “Mother of Museums,” AIB incubated new Smithsonian museums for over 120 years before finally closing to the public in 2004. “FUTURES” is a milestone first step in the long-term plan to renovate and permanently reopen this landmark space.
About Marvel Studios’ Eternals

Marvel Studios’ Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.

The outstanding ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.

Chloé Zhao directed the film and Kevin Feige and Nate Moore are the producers, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Kevin de la Noy serving as executive producers. The story is by Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo, and the screenplay is by Chloé Zhao, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo. Marvel Studios’ Eternals opened in U.S. theaters Nov. 5.

Sky Studios and Birmingham Repertory announce final writers for Sky Comedy Rep

  • Partnership between Sky Studios and Birmingham Repertory Theatre aims to discover and develop new comedy writing talent from across the UK
  • Over 750 people applied, with eleven writers now starting the six-month paid programme
  • Further mentors confirmed for the scheme include Holly Walsh, Emma Fryer, Robin French, Daniel Lawrence Taylor, Oriane Messina and Fay Rusling

Sky Comedy Rep, a partnership between Sky Studios and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, announce they have selected eleven writers to take part in the scheme that aims to discover and develop new regional comedy writing talent from across the UK.

Over 750 aspiring comedy writers applied for the Birmingham-based scheme by sending a sample of a one act play set around the simple premise of a meeting on a park bench. The chosen writers, who come from Bradford, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, London and South Wales, will now go on to develop their one act plays though a six-month paid programme of workshops and mentoring.

Their mentors will be some of the best comedy writers in the business, including Holly Walsh (Motherland, The Other One) Emma Fryer (Home Time) Robin French (Cuckoo), Daniel Lawrence Taylor (Timewasters) and Oriane Messina and Fay Rusling (Breeders, Hitmen) who will join the likes of Meera Syal, Simon Blackwell, Danny Brocklehurst and Guz Khan as mentors on the scheme, with Dame Julie Walters as Patron.

The writers met in Birmingham for the first time over the weekend at a workshop led by The REP’s Artistic Director, Olivier Award-winning Sean Foley (The Play What I Wrote) and Sky Studios Creative Director of Comedy, BAFTA Award-winning Anil Gupta (Goodness Gracious Me, The Office), who oversee the initiative.

Anil Gupta, Creative Director of Comedy at Sky Studios, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response to this scheme and the strength of talent we saw in the applications. We have found eleven truly exceptional writers who hail from all over the UK, and whose unique voices tap into the humour of where they are from. They have exciting futures ahead of them and Sky Studios are proud to be helping them on their path.”

Sean Foley, Birmingham REP Artistic Director said: “I am incredibly excited to help these nine brilliant comedy writers take their first steps in this fantastic industry.  Developing and nurturing new talents is a cornerstone of everything The REP does and it is especially thrilling to see such a diverse group of individuals, hailing from  backgrounds and from all over the UK. These writers have very promising futures ahead of them and I cannot see where their journey will take them”.

The programme will culminate in a live staging at the three-day Sky Comedy REP Festival at The REP early next year, featuring up-and-coming actors and emerging directors.

About the new writers

Rhianna Ilube, Bristol

Rhianna is a Bristol-based playwright and facilitator. She is Associate Artist with Coney, a member of the Royal Court writers group, and Artist-in-Residence at The Advocacy Academy. She started her career organising interactive events for NGOs, before moving to Berlin (post-break-up haze) where she learned basic German, put on even more interactive events and discovered scriptwriting.

Jingan Young, London

Jingan writes for stage and screen. A devoted fan of the rom-com (Meet-cutes! Miscommunication! Unattainable, meticulously curated lifestyles!), her admirable attempt to write one – No 2 Daughter – is currently in development with Greenacre Films. She spearheaded and edited the BESEA play collection ‘Foreign Goods’ published by Oberon Books. Meeting those writing and teaching deadlines often involves late night dumpling feasts.

Ashfaq Gorsi, Manchester

Ash is an Actor & Writer from Manchester, or at least that’s what he tells his mum! He is currently performing for The Northern Comedy Theatre in a UK Tour ‘All Above Board’ written by British comedy Legend Nigel Planer. Ash spent two months in LA taking acting classes and looking for Will Smith. He began writing his daily musings in a journal, that led to writing two short films. The self-proclaimed Curry Kid is said to be #KeenAsMustard to be creating art on stage. In his own words ‘Who needs Shakespeare when you’ve got Shafiqspeare.’

Ryan Walker-Edwards, Birmingham

Ryan describes himself as just a normal guy from Brum. As well as writing, Ryan’s acting work includes ’The Archers, Doctors, Uncertain Kingdom: Sucka Punch’, and has recently been commissioned by BBC Arts to write and produce two short radio projects. Outside of all that good stuff, Ryan co-founded an electronic music platform Incognito Radio.

Rob Carter, London

Rob Carter is an actor/comedian based in London, who is looking to irritate purists and add ‘/writer’ to his bio. He has performed as his alter ego – a dreadful writer called Christopher Bliss – at the Edinburgh Fringe, Soho Theatre, on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and making spoof film reviews for Amazon Prime. Winner of the Musical Comedy Awards and finalist at the BBC New Comedy Awards, Rob also won Best Foreign Short at the LA Comedy Festival for his first short film The Raisin.

Drew Vida Marke, London

Drew is a writer from London who developed a passion for make-believe worlds after one too many trips to Disney World. After therapy to ween her off that mouse-ear magic, she turned her only-child energy to writing, which she did alongside a corporate job. But at a certain point, she decided that writing brought her the kind of joy that an open plan office (albeit with free coffee and pastries) did not. She has been selected for Channel 4’s 4Screenwriting, the BFI’s Best of Year list, the BBC hotlist and won a Film London Borough Award.

Ed Amsden & Tom Coles, Leighton Buzzard and Westcliff-on-Sea

Ed Amsden & Tom Coles are a comedy writing partnership whose broadcast credits include Dead Ringers and The News Quiz. Their career ambition is to write authentic television sitcoms with a distinct working class voice, and they’re thrilled to be involved in this exciting opportunity.

Mari & Lowri Izzard, Bridgend South Wales

Actor/Writer duo Mari & Lowri Izzard are identical twins hailing from working class roots in Bridgend, South Wales. Whilst filming together on comedy feature “Brian & Charles” (Film4/BFI), Mari & Lowri realised they actually really enjoyed working together! This is the duo’s first (official) writing collaboration together.

Kat Rose-Martin, Bradford

Kat’s glittering career has taken her from being a papergirl in Buttershaw, to a girl surrounded by scribbled paper plotlines in another part of Bradford, not even 10 minutes away in the car – if the traffic’s good. On the way she’s performed at Shakespeare’s Globe, written for Holby City; attended an LA writers room from the comfort of her bedroom (thanks Zoom!) and had her foot run over by a golf cart when doing promo work for dairy free butter.

About Sky Comedy REP 2021

Selected writers were asked to submit sample pages for a short, one act comic play. This year each play will be based around the simple premise of a meeting or situation that develops around a Park Bench.  That’s it. Could be anyone, anywhere, anytime. But it has to be funny.

The selected writers will now enter an intensive Writer Development Scheme which will develop their initial idea and hone their writing talent.

Each writer will be allocated an experienced mentor who will work with the writers in one to one sessions to develop their ideas.

The new writers will get the opportunity to participate in masterclasses; workshops and table reads with actors and directors. This development will be based at Birmingham REP, with guidance throughout from both Birmingham REP and the Sky Studios Development team.

Fleabag, Chewing Gum, The League of Gentlemen – all started as live performance. Having your work performed in front of an audience is the best way to answer the ultimate comedy question – is it funny?

The scheme will culminate in a live staging at the three-day Sky Comedy REP Festival in March 2021. The festival will consist of a programme of events including three short plays per evening, performed in the 300 seat Studio Theatre at Birmingham REP.  A special ‘Repertory Company’ of actors will come together under the direction of emerging directing talent to perform the plays in front of an audience.
