On a mission mode towards Green Railways, Indian Railways Organisation of Alternative Fuels (IROAF) invite bids for Hydrogen Fuel Cell based Train on Indian Railways Network

“Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Batteries” and “National Hydrogen Mission” are two flagship programs of Government of India so as to meet out the targets of reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emission under Paris Climate Agreement 2015 and “Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission Railway” by 2030. Accordingly, there has been recent budgetary pronouncement to kick off the concept of Hydrogen Mobility in the Country. Accepting it as a challenge, Indian Railways Organization of Alternate Fuel (IROAF), Green Fuel vertical of Indian Railways, has invited the bids for Hydrogen Fuel Cell based Train on Railways Network. The project shall commence in 89km Sonipat-Jind section of Northern Railway.

Initially, 2 DEMU rakes will be converted and later, 2 Hybrid locos will be converted based on Hydrogen Fuel cell power movement. There will be no change in the driving console. Also, the project will lead to saving of Rs.2.3 Cr. annually.

Sanctioned Work:

•  Provision of Fuel Cell powered Hybrid Traction System for train application on 2 DEMU rakes

•  Current Pink Book item No. 723 of 2021-22

•  Allocation during current year Rs. 8 crore

Brief Scope of Work:

•   On-board equipment as per RDSO specification no. R2/347/Fuel Cell-1 of july’2021

•    Stationary (on ground) hydrogen storage and filling station at site as per RDSO specification no. R2/347/Fuel Cell-1 of july’2021

Tender processing:

•  Two pre-bid conferences scheduled on 17/08/2021 and 09/09/2021

•  Start of submission of offer since 21/09/2021

•  Date of tender opening is 05/10/2021

Indian Railways generated 14,14,604 mandays during the Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyan

Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyan was announced on 20.06.2020 for 125 days i.e., up to 22.10.2020. The Indian Railways identified 143 numbers of ongoing infrastructure projects like doubling of railway line, electrification of line, construction of new line, construction of Bridge/Road over Bridge, Signaling works etc. for expediting the progress of these projects, under Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyan in six selected States. Details are as under:

Railways records more than 10% increase in Freight loading as compared to normal year of 2019-20

Freight figures continue to maintain the high momentum in terms of earnings and loading in the month of April 2021 for Indian Railways.

Railways recorded more than 10% increase in Freight loading as compared to normal year of 2019-20. Previous best April was 101.04 MT in April 2019.

On mission mode, Indian Railways’ Freight loading for the month of April 2021 was 111.47 million tonnes which includes 51.87 million tonnes of Coal, 14.83 million tonnes of Iron Ore, 3.47 million tonnes of Foodgrains, 2.53 million tonnes of Fertilizers, 3.58 million tonnes of Mineral Oil, 7.1 million tonnes of Cement (excluding clinker) and 4.88 million tonnes of Clinker.

In the month of April 2021, Indian Railways earned Rs. 11163.93 crores from freight loading.

It is worth mentioning that a number of concessions/ discounts are also being given in Indian Railways to make Railways Freight movement very attractive.

It may be noted that improvements in freight movements will be institutionalized and incorporated in the upcoming zero based time table.

Covid 19 has been used by Indian Railways an opportunity to improve all round efficiencies and performances.

Indian Railways rolls out first AC Three Tier Economy Class Coach

These coaches is having passenger capacity of 83 berths

These LHB Economy class coaches, after necessary sanctions, shall be inducted in all Mail / Express trains running with LHB coaches (except Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto and Jan Shatabdi etc. special type trains)

Indian Railways Production Unit, Railway Coach Factory, Kapurthala has recently rolled out the first prototype Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) AC three-tier economy class coach of Indian Railways (IR). Trial has been successfully completed.

This is a new variant of LHB AC three-tier coach with features enumerated as below:-

  1. Electrical panels with reduced footprint on the passenger deck, releasing additional floor space for passenger use.
  2. Increased Passenger capacity of 83 Berths.
  3. Provision of an enabling entrance and compartment for Divyangjan with wheelchair access and Provision of Divyangjan friendly toilet with wheelchair access complying to Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan norms.
  4. AC ducting by providing individual vents for all berths.
  5. Modular design of seats and berths to improve comfort, reduced weight and higher maintainability.
  6. Improved passenger conveniences in form of foldable snack tables in both longitudinal and transverse bays, injury free spaces and holders for water bottles, mobile phone and magazines.
  7. Individual reading lights and mobile charging points for each berth.
  8. Ergonomically improved design of ladder for accessing the middle and upper berths.
  9. Increased headroom in the middle and upper berths.
  10. Improved design of the Indian and the Western style lavatories.
  11. Aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic entrance.
  12. Luminescent aisle markers.
  13. Illuminated berth indicators integral with night lights with luminescent berth numbers.
  14. Improved fire safety standards by ensuring compliance to world benchmark of EN45545-2 HL3 for materials.
