     The eighth Belt and Road Summit jointly organised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council will be held in Hong Kong for two consecutive days from tomorrow (September 13). The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, today (September 12) met with the delegation of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) and the chief executives of state-owned enterprises (SoEs) at Government House. The delegation came to Hong Kong to attend the Summit. The delegation is led by the Vice Chairman of the SASAC, Mr Gou Ping, and comprises more than 260 members from over 35 SoEs.
      
     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Algernon Yau; the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan; and the Commissioner for Belt and Road, Mr Nicholas Ho, also attended the meeting.
      
     Mr Lee said that the delegation led by the SASAC to participate in this year’s Summit is the largest compared with the previous ones. He thanked the SASAC and SoEs for their strong support for the Summit, marking the milestone of the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative.
      
     Mr Lee pointed out that with its diversified and comprehensive professional services, as well as its financing channels, Hong Kong could open up the Belt and Road market with SoEs together to enhance the “soft connectivity” of the Belt and Road and contribute to its high-quality development. A special Middle East Forum and sessions on finance arranged for this year’s Summit will promote the connections of Hong Kong’s business and professional services sectors with enterprises on the Mainland and the rest of the world, he added. Mr Lee encouraged Mainland and Hong Kong enterprises to participate in the exchange session with enterprises of the Middle East to build connections and explore collaboration opportunities. He also encouraged the SoEs to actively participate in the Summit and make use of Hong Kong as a platform to explore the immense business opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative.
      
     In the evening, Mr Lee hosted a networking dinner at Government House. The attendees included representatives from Hong Kong’s political, business and professional sectors, members of the SASAC delegation, as well as representatives who will attend the Summit, including the Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Mr Zheng Yanxiong; the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce, Ms Guo Tingting; the Vice Chairman of the SASAC, Mr Gou Ping; the Deputy Secretary General of the National Development and Reform Commission, Mr Xiao Weiming, and the Acting Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR, Mr Pan Yundong. Mr Lee expressed his gratitude to the guests and his hope that they would continue to support Hong Kong’s full participation in the Belt and Road Initiative.

     ​The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, met the Secretary of the CPC Jiangmen Municipal Committee, Mr Chen Anming, today (August 1) to exchange views on deepening Hong Kong’s co-operation with Jiangmen. The Director of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms Carol Yip, also attended the meeting. 
      
     Mr Lee welcomed Mr Chen’s visit to Hong Kong with his delegation. He said that Hong Kong proactively promotes and strengthens its co-operation with Jiangmen, as well as other cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to achieve complementarity and mutual benefits, contributing to the construction of an international first-class bay area for living, working and travelling.
      
     Noting that Hong Kong has strong capabilities in scientific research while the advanced manufacturing of Jiangmen has been developing rapidly, Mr Lee said he looked forward to the continued deepening of collaboration among the industry, academia and research sectors, promoting the transformation of technological outcomes, and strengthening the linkage of innovation and technology between the two places.
      
     Mr Lee said that he had led a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region delegation to visit three member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), namely Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia last week, where he introduced Hong Kong’s unique advantages of enjoying the strong support of the motherland and being closely connected to the world under “one country, two systems” to local political and business communities, and encouraged ASEAN enterprises to explore the GBA market and expand their businesses in Hong Kong and other bay area cities by making good use of Hong Kong’s professional services and financing platform.

     The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, met the Secretary of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee, Mr Zhou Zuyi, at Government House today (June 27) to exchange views on strengthening Hong Kong’s co-operation with Fujian. The Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Cheuk Wing-hing; the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Kevin Yeung; the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Erick Tsang Kwok-wai; and the Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, also attended the meeting.

     Mr Lee welcomed Mr Zhou and his delegation’s visit to Hong Kong. He said that the relationship between Fujian and Hong Kong has always been close, adding that Hong Kong has been the largest source of external direct investment in the province in recent years. Mr Lee said he was confident that with the gradual recovery of the global economy, the economic and trade co-operation between Hong Kong and Fujian will bring new impetus to the economic growth of both places.
      
     He wished the Fourth Plenary Session of the Hong Kong/Fujian Co-operation Conference to be held in Hong Kong tomorrow (June 28) a great success with fruitful achievements, bringing the co-operation and development of the two places to new heights.
      
     Mr Lee pointed out that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government has all along been fully leveraging Hong Kong’s role as a functional platform for the Belt and Road Initiative, and encouraging Hong Kong enterprises and its professional services sectors to expand their businesses in the Belt and Road countries and collaborate with Mainland enterprises in going global together. He noted that Hong Kong offers an enormous base of professionals well versed in international regulations, who could provide Fujian with legal advice and services in Belt and Road development projects and help enterprises understand international rules, so that they could effectively cope with relevant risks when investing in different countries or regions.
      
     Mr Lee said that he looked forward to the continuous and pragmatic co-operation between Fujian and Hong Kong in such areas as innovation and technology, maritime and logistics, tourism and youth development, so the two places could better grasp the development opportunities arising from the National 14th Five-Year Plan and promote mutual benefits. The Fujian Liaison Unit of the HKSAR Government will continue to act as a bridge to promote exchanges and co-operation between the two places.

     The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, met with the Senate President of the Philippines, Mr Juan Miguel Fernandez Zubiri, during the latter’s visit to Hong Kong today (May 27), to exchange views on matters of common interest. The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr Christopher Hui, also joined the meeting.

     Mr Lee said that Hong Kong and the Philippines have maintained close exchanges and co-operation in various fields such as trade, investment and finance, and that Hong Kong is an important trading and investment partner for the Philippines and other countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He encouraged more Philippine enterprises and talents to develop in Hong Kong and make better use of Hong Kong’s professional services and internationalised business environment for expanding into Mainland markets, including that of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

     Mr Lee also stated that Hong Kong is continuing to strive for early accession to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, and expressed his gratitude to the Philippines for its support in Hong Kong’s bid for accession.

     The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, met with the visiting Chairman of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Mr Erkin Tuniyaz, today (April 26).
      
     Mr Lee welcomed the visit by Mr Tuniyaz and the delegation to promote exchanges and co-operation between Hong Kong and Xinjiang on areas such as economic and trade as well as culture and tourism, and organise trade, cultural and tourism promotional events during the visit.
      
     Noting that Hong Kong and Xinjiang have frequent trade, economic and people-to-people exchanges, and with Xinjiang’s rich historical and cultural background, Mr Lee hoped that people-to-people bonds between the two places will be strengthened through organising cultural, arts and tourism activities.
      
     “With the full resumption of normal travel with the Mainland and Hong Kong’s reconnection to the world, it is now the best time for Hong Kong to give full play to its dual roles in ‘going global and attracting foreign investment’. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will focus on pursuing economic development and strengthening competitiveness this year, promoting comprehensive economic, trade, cultural and tourism exchanges with the Mainland and other parts of the world. I believe that Hong Kong and Xinjiang can enhance co-operation in various aspects to jointly promote development and achieve mutual benefits,” said Mr Lee.
