On February 24, 2022, Darren Rouse, an inmate from Bath Institution, died while in our custody following a serious assault.

On February 24, 2022, Darren Rouse, an inmate from Bath Institution, died while in our custody following a serious assault.

The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are currently investigating the incident. No staff members were injured during this incident.

At the time of death, Mr. Rouse, 55 years old, had been serving a sentence of 11 years and 2 months for sexual assault, trafficking schedule I/II substance, obstruct public/peace officer, and assault, since September 12, 2018. 

The inmate’s next of kin has been notified.  

CSC takes the death of an inmate very seriously. At this time, no further information is available while the investigation is underway.

On February 22, 2022, Alan Peter Knapczyk, an inmate from Matsqui Institution, died while in our custody.

On February 22, 2022, Alan Peter Knapczyk, an inmate from Matsqui Institution, died while in our custody.

At the time of his death, the inmate had been serving a 14 years, 9 months and 1 day sentence for traffic in schedule I/II substances, obstruction of a public/peace officer, commission of offence for criminal organization, since September 19, 2012.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires the police and coroner be notified.

On February 15, 2022, William Roy Tame, an inmate from Pacific Institution, died while in our custody of apparent natural causes.

February 18, 2022 – Abbotsford, British Columbia – Correctional Service Canada

On February 15, 2022, William Roy Tame, an inmate from Pacific Institution, died while in our custody of apparent natural causes.

At the time of his death, Mr. Tame had been serving an indeterminate sentence for first degree murder and sexual assault since October 10, 1986.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

Canada – Death of an inmate from Drumheller Institution

On January 26, 2022, an inmate from Drumheller Institution died while in our custody following a serious assault in the medium security unit. The assailant has been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken. No staff members or other inmates were injured during this incident.

At the time of his death, Mr. Jeffrey Ryan, 34 years old, had been serving a sentence of three years, two months, and five days for Possess Weapon Contrary to Prohibition Order, Possess Firearm Knowing Unauthorized, and Possess Schedule I/II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking since April 2, 2019.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

The Drumheller detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are currently investigating the incident.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances and notify the coroner.

At the time of his death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 5 years 3 months and 22 days for robbery, possession and use of a firearm and flight from a peace officer since December 16, 2021.
