Award-winning director, producer and screenwriter Ryan Coogler delivered this years David Lean Lecture a highlight of BAFTAs public programme – educating, informing and inspiring the public by providingrareinsight into the craft and method of some of the worldsleading and sector definingfilmmakers.Over the course of 90 minutes, to a packed-out auditorium of aspiring and established creatives and wider members of the public at BAFTAs 195 Piccadilly HQ, Coogler discussed his journey to becoming the ground-breaking filmmaker.

Black Panther found phenomenal success; making history as the first big-budget film to be fronted by a predominantly black superhero ensemble. Having made his mark as a socially-engaged filmmaker with Fruitvale Station (2013) and commercially-successful with Creed (2015), it was Cooglers vision of a new Marvel-verse in Black Panther that cemented him in Hollywood. With box office takings of over $1billion worldwide, the film was hailed as a major move forward for African-American representation, on and off-screen.

At BAFTAs David Lean Lecture, Coogler shared personal insights and experiences linked to five recurring and central themes within his work: identity, community, ritual, fear and time. Touching on his upbringing and the places, relationships and films that shaped his early childhood, to the pivot from a passion for sports to screenwriting, to early experiences of filmmaking to writing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Coogler delivered a deeply moving and personal lecture.

Alongside highlighting his admiration for the work of Sir David Lean, whose foundation supports the annual BAFTA lecture series; Coogler also shared quotes from filmmakers including the late John Singleton and the late Chadwick Boseman who have played an instrumental role in shaping his creative vision and work. Coogler underscored the personal responsibility he feels as a Black filmmaker in amplifying positive representation of African-Americans on and off-screen, and closed the lecture by encouraging the audience to realise their creative ambitions. There is no time like the present.

MHI Group Delivers Two Large-Capacity Centrifugal Chillers for Singapore’s Marina Bay District Cooling System

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group companies – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. (MHI Thermal Systems) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MHI-AP) – have jointly delivered two large-capacity centrifugal chillers for a large-scale district cooling system in Singapore’s Marina Bay as part of plans to expand the system. The two chillers, offerings in the “GART series”, have a collective cooling capacity of 8,400 refrigeration tons (RT). and will bring the total number of centrifugal chillers provided by MHI Group to the Marina Bay area to 18.

The GART-400PLS.SCF model centrifugal chillers each have a cooling capacity of 4,200 RT, the largest capacity of all units delivered to the Marina Bay district cooling system to date. The new units can accommodate the HFO-1234ze(E) refrigerant, which is recognized for its extremely low environmental impact: a global warming potential (GWP) below 1(Note1). In addition, the GART-400PLS.SCF chillers have a near 6% higher rated coefficient of performance (COP)(Note2) and approximately 10% higher integrated part load value (IPLV)(Note3) than earlier models, enabled by the adoption of a tandem operating configuration resulting in reduced energy consumption. Carbon emissions can also be cut by 9%(Note4).

Marina Bay is Singapore’s central district for business and tourism and is part of the country’s plan for a sustainable live-work-play community. Designed, built and operated by SP Group, a leading utilities group and sustainable energy solutions provider in the Asia Pacific, the Marina Bay district cooling system is the world’s largest underground district cooling network. The system produces chilled water centrally at two plants, which serves the air-conditioning needs of over 20 buildings in the Marina Bay district. Centrifugal chillers are critical components of the plant as they are the high-efficiency heat source devices functioning at its core.

Undergoing continuous expansion, the system will service a total of 28 buildings by 2026 and will reduce approximately 20,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

MHI Group was awarded the order based on its technological strength and after-sales servicing capabilities, as well as the environmental performance, economic benefits and high reliability of its centrifugal chillers – as proven through its excellent delivery record.

MHI Thermal Systems is Japan’s leading manufacturer of centrifugal chillers, offering a wide variety of models for applications including district cooling/heating and factory air-conditioning. The Chiller Business Unit was started in April 2008 in Singapore, and today the team handles related marketing and servicing at MHI-AP throughout Southeast Asia, responding efficiently to local customer needs. Going forward, both companies will continue to meet customer needs and deliver centrifugal chillers with minimal environmental impact to help realize a carbon neutral world.

(1) CO2 is assigned a GWP of 1. The lower the GWP factor, the less impact there is on the environment.
(2) COP designates energy consumption efficiency calculated based on rated conditions. COP = rated cooling capacity (kW) – power consumption (kW). The higher a system’s COP, the more energy-efficient it is.
(3) IPLV designates annual energy efficiency taking into consideration fluctuations in load and cooling water temperature over a one-year period of operation. The higher a system’s IPLV, the more energy-efficient it is.
(4) Estimated with 3 conventional AART -280 PL.EX (cooling capacity: 2,800 RT) models based on the weather conditions in Singapore and the assumed load pattern of district cooling in Singapore.

STMicroelectronics delivers breakthrough in non-volatile memory with industry’s first Serial Page EEPROM –

Geneva, Switzerland – WEBWIRE

Geneva, June 21, 2022 – Building upon its proven expertise in serial EEPROM technology, STMicroelectronics has introduced the market’s first Serial Page EEPROM. This brand-new class of EEPROM is a high-density, page-erasable SPI memory that delivers unique and unprecedented flexibility and performance with ultra-low power consumption. Starting with the 32Mbit M95P32, ST will grow the new Serial Page EEPROM family by adding 16Mbit and 8Mbit density options in due course.

The innovative architecture gives designers the ability to mix firmware management and flexible data storage in the same device, a combination not previously available. This higher level of memory integration reduces bill of materials (BoM) and time-to-market, increases application value, and enables smaller modules with ultra-low power operation and thus longer battery lifetime. These devices are ideal for implementing all-in-one non-volatile memory in new system designs for applications such as industrial IoT modules, wearables, healthcare, medical, electronic shelf-edge labelling, smart meters, and 5G optical-fiber modules.

An entirely new development, Serial Page EEPROM combines ST’s patented e-STM 40nm non-volatile memory (NVM) cell technology with a new smart page architecture, bringing together the benefits of high memory density for firmware with byte flexibility and high endurance for simplified data logging. It also features fast read, erase, and program cycles, reducing manufacturing costs and application downtimes by enabling rapid upload and download. Fast power up and quad output read allow for faster application wake up.

This new simplified memory integration enables improved cost of ownership, offering ease-of-use, simple software development, and high reliability. Serial Page EEPROM offers a non-volatile memory solution that is less expensive than FRAM while offering lower power consumption, as well as enhanced functionality and greater ease of use compared with serial Flash and Dataflash products, respectively.
