     ​Correctional officers at Lo Wu Correctional Institution stopped a female remand person in custody from attacking a staff member today (November 9).

     At 2.21pm today, a 33-year-old female remand person in custody suddenly became emotional and attacked a correctional officer inside a dayroom. The officer at the scene immediately ordered the assailant to stop and called for reinforcement.

     During the incident, the officer sustained an injury to her face. She did not need to be sent to a public hospital after examination and treatment by the institution Medical Officer. The assailant did not sustain any injuries.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     The assailant was remanded for the offence of theft in July 2023.

     Correctional officers at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (October 16) intercepted a male remand person in custody smuggling a suspected dangerous drug into the centre by concealing it inside his body.

     The 31-year-old person in custody was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug on October 13. After undergoing X-ray body scanning, he was suspected to have swallowed the dangerous drug before admission. He was therefore separated and put under close monitoring.

     At 1.57pm today, he discharged one pack of the suspected dangerous drug with a weight of about 18 grams wrapped in a plastic sheet. The case has been reported to the Police for follow-up.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, “The department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs or unauthorised articles into correctional institutions in order to maintain good order and discipline, and a drug-free environment for all persons in custody.”

     ​Correctional officers stopped a remand person in custody committing self-harm in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (August 24).

     At 8.30am, a 66-year-old male remand person in custody was found emotionally unstable and banging his head against the wall inside a hospital ward. Officers at the scene immediately stopped him and called for reinforcement. The person in custody was found conscious. After receiving examination and treatment by institution medical officer, he was referred to a public hospital for further treatment.

     A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up on the case.

     A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, “The department uses all possible measures to prevent persons in custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institutional facilities, staff training and first aid services.”

     The person in custody was remanded for the offence of murder in August 2023.

     ​The Correctional Services Department (CSD) launched its official Instagram account today (April 14), further expanding its channels to enhance communication with the public, especially the younger generation.

     Following the launch of its YouTube channel, Facebook page and WeChat account, the newly launched “CSD Instagram” will adopt a youth-oriented approach, through innovative and diversified multimedia feeds, to promote to young people various aspects of the CSD’s work and its mission, as well as national security, national education and messages of leading a law-abiding and drug-free life and supporting offender rehabilitation, so as to foster their positive values.

     ​The Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (February 23) launched an operation at Stanley Prison to combat illicit activities of persons in custody.

     The management of Stanley Prison recently stepped up measures to combat illicit gambling activities among persons in custody and took disciplinary actions against those suspected to have committed disciplinary offences. Thereafter, the institution management continued to closely monitor other target persons in custody.

     At 8.47am today, 15 male persons in custody aged between 26 and 51 engaged in a fight inside a dining hall for illicit gambling issue. Officers at the scene immediately stopped the fight and summoned reinforcement. OC foam was applied to subdue them after warnings given were futile. 

     During the incident, 10 persons in custody sustained injuries to their head, back, hands, legs, etc. respectively. After examination and treatment by the institution Medical Officer, two of them were referred to a public hospital for further treatment whilst eight of them did not need to be sent out. The remaining five persons in custody did not sustain any injury. The case has been reported to the Police for investigation. All the persons in custody concerned have been removed from association pending further investigation.

     In order to crack down on the illicit activities, the CSD has deployed the Regional Response Team, staff of the Security Section and Dog Unit to reinforce the management of Stanley Prison to conduct a special searching operation. During the operation, eight persons in custody were found in possession of unauthorised articles and removed from association for investigation. The atmosphere at Stanley Prison is stable at present. The CSD will closely monitor the situation and the activities of persons in custody concerned.

     In order to assist persons in custody to rehabilitate in a safe and orderly environment, the CSD spares no effort in combating illicit activities of all kinds in its institutions.

     Stanley Prison is a maximum security institution for the detention of male adult convicted and remand persons in custody.
