The following is issued on behalf of the Transport Advisory Committee:

The Chairman of the Transport Advisory Committee (TAC), Professor Stephen Cheung, welcomed the traffic-related initiatives announced in “The Chief Executive’s 2022 Policy Address” delivered today (October 19).

Professor Cheung said, “The Chief Executive announced in his Policy Address that the Government will further extend the special temporary measures under the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme to April 30 next year. The Government will also continue to take forward various smart mobility initiatives, including legislating for a regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles and improving the Traffic Data Analytics System. I welcome these initiatives pursued by the Government which benefit the citizens commuting by public transport, and those smart mobility items will also bring a more reliable, convenient and smooth commuting experience to the public.

“Furthermore, one of the key highlights of this Policy Address is taking forward a series of transport infrastructure projects, including the construction of the three major road projects and the three strategic railway projects recommended in the Strategic Studies on Railways and Major Roads beyond 2030. Other railway and road projects in the Northern Metropolis and other areas will continue to be implemented. Meanwhile, the Government is actively proceeding with the Traffic and Transport Strategy Study and expects to complete the territory-wide Travel Characteristics Survey next year, with a view to promulgating a Transport Strategy Blueprint in 2025. I support the Government bringing forward infrastructure construction and increasing development capacity, and formulating the Transport Strategy Blueprint in a forward-looking manner. These policies will create a further enhanced road and rail network with high interconnectivity for Hong Kong, becoming a major impetus to our future growth and the cornerstone of furthering Hong Kong’s long-term development.

“I am also pleased to note that the Government has set indicators for different measures in order to enhance transparency and ensure their timely implementation. The TAC will, as always, continue to earnestly offer views on various traffic and transport policies and measures for the Government to proceed with building and enhancing our transportation system, with a view to elevating and consolidating Hong Kong’s status as an international metropolis and regional logistics hub.”
