Vice President calls for meaningful cinema, says filmmakers have a responsibility to not create divisions in society


The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu today called upon filmmakers to produce meaningful cinema that reflects social realities and leaves a positive impact on society. Observing that cinema is a powerful medium that has a lasting impression on people’s minds, Shri Naidu said that filmmakers have a responsibility to not glorify violence, portray obscenity, create unrest or stoke communal divisions in society. ‘On the other hand, with purposeful and thought provoking cinema, filmmakers can fight social evils and engender positive social change’, he added.


The Vice President released the first volume of the collected works of the prominent Telugu film lyricist and poet, late Shri Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry organized by Telugu Association of North America (TANA) Prapancha Saahithya Vedika in Hyderabad today. Shri Naidu paid rich tributes to the noted lyricist and observed that music in cinema can have great literary value and can effectively take the poetic tradition to the masses. He called for “striving for excellence in film music and lyrics outside the straitjacket of commercial equations”.


Avadhani Shri Garikipati Narasimha Rao, President, TANA, Shri Lavu Anjaiah Chowdary, TANA Prapancha Saahitya Vedika Chairman, Dr Thotakura Prasad, noted filmmaker Shri Trivikram Srinivas, family members of late Shri Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry and others were present during the book release event.

Vice President calls for protecting and promoting Indian musical tradition


The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu today stressed the need to protect Indian culture and heritage, particularly the Indian musical tradition, by popularizing it among the younger generations. Noting that Indian music has ancient origins and was used to transmit knowledge in the olden days, Shri Naidu said ‘music indeed has the power to relieve the mental stress and anxieties of modern life’.


Shri Naidu was speaking at the centenary celebrations of Shri Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, a legendary musician and playback singer in Indian films, organised by Kinnera Art Theatres in Hyderabad today. Addressing the gathering, Shri Naidu said that Indian tradition has a special place in world music and that music was practised not just as an art form, but also as a precise science. He recalled that music is also effective as a tool for social transformation. ‘Music can not only provide entertainment, but can also enlighten society’, he added.


On this occasion, Shri Naidu paid rich tributes to the singer and musician, Shri Ghantasala and said the prolific singer, along with late Shri S.P. Balasubrahmanyam contributed immensely to the golden age of music in cinema. He conferred the Ghantasala Memorial Award on Shri Nagoor Babu (Mano), renowned playback singer. Earlier, the Vice President witnessed the performances of Shri Mano and various other artists, who gave rendition to many timeless melodies of Shri Ghantasala.

Vice President calls for awarding some extra marks to sportspersons in college admissions and job promotions to incentivise sports


The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu today called for awarding some extra marks to sportspersons in college admissions and promotions in various departments. “Incentives like this will go a long way in encouraging the sports in the country,” he said.


Addressing the gathering at the inaugural of the Khelo India University Games-2021 in Bengaluru today, the Vice President gave a call to return to our roots and asked all stakeholders to give top priority to our indigenous and rural sports. He expressed happiness over the fact that this edition of Khelo India would feature 20 sports disciplines with indigenous sports like Yogasana and Mallakhamba introduced for the first time. “This is very important in order to preserve and promote our rural and indigenous games which are rooted in tradition and are a part of our cultural heritage,” he said.

Emphasizing the need to encourage sporting activity upto village level, he called for developing the necessary sports infrastructure at the grassroots level, with concerted efforts of the centre, state and local bodies. Together, these will take the Indian sporting potential to new heights, he added.


Calling for promoting ‘sportsman spirit’ in all spheres of life including politics, Shri Naidu said sports teach us patience, perseverance and handling of victory or defeat with equanimity. He appealed to all to make sports as an inalienable part of their daily lives.


Hailing the New Education Policy-2020 for its emphasis on sports, the Vice President commended the state of Karnataka for its massive upgradation of sporting venues on par with international standards. Observing that there is no dearth of talent in India in the field of sports, he called for efforts toward early identification, adequate training, and support of this vast talent pool. Calling Khelo India a praiseworthy initiative, Shri Naidu said that it would not only help in early identification of the best talent, but also ensure that all sports enthusiasts have an equal opportunity to succeed.


Shri Naidu further said that sports and games ensure the physical fitness of an individual; inculcate discipline and team spirit, apart from kindling the desire to excel through healthy competition. Calling for making Games and Sports or Yoga an integral part of the school curriculum from a young age, the Vice President said that we must encourage children, youth and the elderly to stay fit by taking part regularly in sports or any other physical activity. He also advised the youngsters to avoid sedentary lifestyle and junk food and instead eat properly cooked traditional Indian food.


The Vice President commended the organizers for declaring the Khelo India University Games-2021 as the first ever “Green Games” under which all efforts are being made to promote the use of non-plastic and reusable/ recyclable materials in the conduct of these games. Describing this step as exemplary, he wanted the organizers of other events to follow these good practices. Shri Naidu also praised the co-host of the Games, Jain Deemed-to-Be-University for its encouragement to sports.


During the inaugural ceremony, artists and sportspersons showcased their performances including Malkambh Act, Acrobatic Performance and a dance sequence showcasing Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Vice President calls for greater participation of private sector in strengthening health infrastructure


The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu today emphasised the need for greater private sector participation in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in India. Noting that catering to India’s healthcare needs is a stupendous task, he called upon the private sector to complement the government efforts and take “medical profession and allied activities as a mission”.


Inaugurating the new Mahajan Imaging facility in Safdarjung Development Area in New Delhi, Shri Naidu said that making world-class health infrastructure and diagnostics accessible to people is the need of the hour. Shri Naidu said that high-standard diagnostics will enable doctors to diagnose more accurately and make safer interventions.


 Highlighting the worrying trend of increasing non-communicable diseases in India, Shri Naidu urged the medical fraternity in the private sector to create awareness among people, particularly the youth, on the dangers posed by a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy dietary habits. Shri Naidu appealed to the people to shun a sedentary lifestyle and adopt a healthy way of living.


 Shri Naidu said the COVID pandemic and rapidly changing climate “teach us many lessons about our habits and way of life”. He called for spending more time in the lap of nature and to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.


 The Vice President complimented the management of the Mahajan Imaging for their efforts in coming up with an advanced diagnostic facility. Dr Harsh Mahajan, Founder and Managing Director of Mahajan Imaging, Smt. Ritu Mahajan, Executive Director and other dignitaries were present during the event.
