     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Algernon Yau, attended the Ministerial Council Meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris, France on June 7 (Paris time).
 
     Speaking at a discussion session on trade policies for resilient and inclusive growth, Mr Yau stressed the importance of fighting against any form of protectionism as the world is walking out from the pandemic.
 
     “Trade is not, and should never be seen as, a ‘zero-sum’ game. We must continue to provide a free, fair, open, non-discriminatory, transparent and predictable environment for trade and investment to thrive,” he said.
 
     “Commitments to forging regional trade agreements that are inclusive and open, that seek to deepen economic integration, and that promote economic and technical co-operation will overcome divisions and bolster connectivity,” he added.
 
     He also highlighted that ongoing dialogues and exchanges between governments and also with various stakeholders should be promoted.
 
     In addition, Mr Yau called on participating ministers to uphold the rules-based multilateral trading system and drive forward the World Trade Organization’s discussions about restoring a fully and well-functioning dispute settlement system, the Joint Statement Initiatives on E-Commerce and Investment Facilitation for Development, etc.
 
     On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr Yau met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, Mr Bui Thanh Son, to exchange views on enhancing bilateral relationships. He also had a breakfast meeting with the France-Hong Kong Business Association to promote Hong Kong’s advantages and business opportunities.
 
     Mr Yau will proceed to Budapest, Hungary on June 8 (Paris time) for a two-day visit.

     The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Mr Victor Liu, today (June 6) attended the 10th anniversary ceremony of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Asia and Pacific Regional Sub-Office (APAC RSO) in Beijing by invitation. Officiated by the Administrator of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Mr Song Zhiyong, and the Secretary General of the ICAO, Mr Juan Carlos Salazar, the ceremony was attended by representatives of civil aviation authorities and industry partners.
 
     The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has been actively engaged in the work and activities of the ICAO. This includes promoting the initiatives of the Regional Aviation Safety Group – Asia Pacific Region, participating in meetings of the Asia Pacific Air Navigation Planning and Implementation Regional Group, and seconding CAD officers to the APAC RSOs in Beijing, China, and Bangkok, Thailand. Through co-operation and exchanges with aviation authorities of the region as well as international organisations, the development of the aviation industry in the Asia-Pacific region is further promoted.
 
     Mr Liu arrived in Beijing yesterday (June 5). During his visit to Beijing, Mr Liu called on the CAAC and representatives of the CAAC’s Office of Aviation Safety to exchange views on issues including flight safety. Mr Liu also visited the China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology to learn about the new opportunities brought about to the civil aviation industry by technological development.

     Accompanying Mr Liu to Beijing was the Acting Assistant Director-General of Civil Aviation (Air Services and Safety Management), Mr Michael Yuen.

     Mr Liu will return to Hong Kong tomorrow (June 7).

BYD Attends Zero-Emission Ride and Drive Truck Event in Long Beach, CA

 BYD (Build Your Dreams) will showcase U.S. assembled battery-electric 8TT and 8Y trucks Wednesday at the Harbor Trucking Association’s Ride and Drive, a free event open to the general public.

The BYD 8TT and 8Y trucks are the first commercially available all-electric class 8-day cab and terminal tractors similar to those being currently operated in the port of Long Beach. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 2100 W. Anaheim St., Long Beach, CA 90802.

BYD Senior Vice President Patrick Duan said the Long Beach Ride and Drive event offers a unique opportunity for those interested in electric vehicles to get some hands-on experience. BYD employees will be available to demonstrate and answer questions.

“This is a great opportunity for people to learn more about the electrification of heavy duty vehicles,” Duan said. “The Long Beach port has been a key player in moving towards all-electric infrastructure, and we welcome this opportunity to showcase our models like the 8TT and 8Y which are ‘Hard at Work’ throughout the U.S.”

BYD trucks are assembled in Lancaster, California by members of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation (SMART) union, Local 105.

     ​The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, attended the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand today (November 18) and exchanged views with the leaders of other economies on how to address barriers to trade and investment, promote resilient supply chains and closer people-to-people connectivity, as well as deepen economic and technical co-operation to enhance inclusive and sustainable growth.


      


     The APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting Retreat this year were held in two sessions. Mr Lee in the first session of the meeting today said that Hong Kong has formulated robust policy measures to respond to sustainability challenges. These included striving to slash Hong Kong’s total carbon emissions by half of the 2005 level before 2035 with a pledge of carbon neutrality before 2050, as well as leveraging Hong Kong’s international connectivity to facilitate matching between international capital and quality green projects, in particular those included under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development and the Belt and Road Initiative.


      


     Then, Mr Lee attended the APEC Leaders’ Informal Dialogue with Guests. In his remarks, Mr Lee said that he was encouraged that ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) members welcomed Hong Kong’s accession request to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and Hong Kong looked forward to contributing its unique strengths in trade and investment to strengthen RCEP’s leadership role as the world’s largest free trade agreement.


      


     In the afternoon, Mr Lee attended the APEC Leaders’ Dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council. Three Hong Kong, China’s representatives, namely Ms Marjorie Yang, Chairman of Esquel Group; Mr Nicholas Ho, Chairman of hpa (Ho & Partners Architects Engineers and Development Consultants Limited); and Ms Mary Huen, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong, and Cluster Chief Executive Officer (Hong Kong, Taiwan & Macau) of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited, also attended the session. After that, Mr Lee attended a breakout session with the Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Wang Wentao; the President of the Republic of Chile, Mr Gabriel Boric Font; the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia, Mr Mohd Zuki Ali; the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Mr Andrei Belousov; the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong; and the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc, to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.


      


     Mr Lee also had a bilateral meeting with the President of Indonesia, Mr Joko Widodo, to exchange views on issues of mutual interest. He sent his congratulations to Indonesia on successfully hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit, and looked forward to many more exchanges and deeper co-operation with Indonesia.


      


     Mr Lee also held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong. Noting that Singapore is an important trading partner of Hong Kong, he welcomed Singaporean businesses to partner with Hong Kong to tap into the vast opportunities presented by the Greater Bay Area and Belt and Road Initiative.


      


     In the evening, Mr Lee attended the Royal Audience and was received by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana.


      


     Mr Lee will attend the second session of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting Retreat tomorrow (November 19) and have dinner with Hong Kong’s business delegation and Thailand business leaders in the evening.


PM Modi attends celebrations of 553rd Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji


The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today attended and offered prayers at celebrations of the 553rd Prakash Parv of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji at New Delhi. The Prime Minister was felicitated with Shawl, Siropa and Sword.


Addressing the gathering the Prime MInister greeted everyone on the auspicious occasion of Gurpurab and Prakash Parv and also for Dev Deepawali. He expressed his happiness for having the opportunity to celebrate key Prakash Parvs such as 350th Prakash Parv of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, 400th Prakash Parv of Guru Teg Bahadur ji and 550th Prakashotsav of Guru Nanak Devji. “The inspiration and blessings of these auspicious occasions is enhancing the energy of New India…Light of every Prakash Parv is acting as a source of light for the country”, the Prime Minister said. He elaborated that the meaning of Prakash Parv that has been followed by the Sikh community has shown the nation path of duty and dedication. The Prime Minister expressed his devotion to the Guru Kripa, Gurbani and Langar ka prasad on these holy occasions. “This not only provide inner peace but also keeps the will to serve with dedication, eternal”, he added


The Prime Minister said “Inspired by Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s thoughts, the country is moving ahead with the spirit of welfare of 130 crore Indians.” The Prime Minister recalled Guru Nanak Dev ji’s teaching for spiritual enlightenment, worldly prosperity and social harmony. The Prime Minister said that in the Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal, the country has rekindled the sense of pride in the nation’s glory and spiritual identity. In order to encourage the supreme sense of duty, the country has decided to celebrate this phase as Kartavya Kaal. During this phase of Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal work of equality, harmony, social justice and unity is undergoing with Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas, he said.  “Direction that we received from Gurbani is tradition, faith as well as vision of developed India also”, he added.


Underlining the eternal relevance of Guru’s teaching the Prime Minister said “the glory of the Amrit that we have in the form of Guru Granth Sahib, its significance is beyond the limits of time and geography. We also see that when the crisis gets bigger, the relevance of these solutions increases even more. In times of unrest and instability in the world, the teachings of Guru Sahib and the life of Guru Nanak Dev ji are showing the direction to the world like a torch.” The Prime Minister said that the more we live the ideals of our Gurus, the more we embody a sense of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’, the the more we we give importance to the values of humanity, the louder and clearer the teachings of Guru Sahibs will reach every person.


The Prime Minister said that through the blessings of Guru Nanak Dev ji, we got the opportunity to serve the great Sikh heritage during the last 8 years. He mentioned laying the foundation stone of the ropeway from Gobind Ghat to Hemkunt Sahib and Delhi Una Vande Bharat Express for the convenience of the pilgrims. Electrification of places related with Guru Gobind Singh ji and Delhi Katra Amritsar expressway will also add to the convenience. The government is spending more than 35 thousand crore rupees on this, he informed. The Prime Minister said that these efforts go beyond amenities and tourism potential, this is about the energy of our places of faith, Sikh heritage, service, love and devotion. The Prime Minister also mentioned steps like opening of Kartarpur Sahib corridor, bringing back the holy forms of Guru Granth Sahib from Afghanistan and declaring 26 December as Veer Bal Diwas in the honour of the supreme sacrifice of the Sahibzaades. “In the memory of the sacrifices made by the people of our Punjab in Partition, the country has also started Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas. We have also tried to create a way to give citizenship to the Hindu-Sikh families affected by the Partition by bringing in the CAA Act”, the Prime Minister said


“I have full faith that, with Gurus’ blessings, India will keep enhancing the glory of its Sikh tradition and will keep moving on the path of progress”, the Prime Minister concluded.
