The following is issued on behalf of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council:
The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council reminded interested applicants today (August 1) that its Fellowships and Scholarships for Overseas Studies (including the award for students with disabilities) for the academic year 2023/24 have been accepting applications since July 4. The closing date for all applications is September 9, 2022.
The fellowships and scholarships aim at encouraging outstanding students to pursue further studies in reputable institutions overseas. Successful candidates for the awards are expected to have a strong sense of commitment to Hong Kong and be ready to contribute significantly to the community upon graduation.
The fellowships are for studies leading to postgraduate degrees either by research or by coursework; the scholarships are for studies leading to undergraduate degrees.
The applicants will be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission requirements of the academic institutions of their choice.
The maximum value of a fellowship is HK$300,000 per year, tenable for up to three years for a doctoral degree or two years for a master’s degree. The maximum value of a scholarship is HK$280,000 per year, tenable for up to three years.

Short-listed applicants of Fellowships and Scholarships for Overseas Studies will be invited to attend interviews in Hong Kong. The first round of interviews is scheduled for January 2023. If found suitable, applicants will be invited for a final interview to be held around February/March 2023. The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Rediscover Main Streets initiative, is investing up to $10 million to help non-profit organizations generate new ideas that inspire residents and tourists alike to rediscover these vibrant local spaces. During her visit to Halifax to attend the 2022 Halifax Business Awards, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA, strolled the Bedford Basin Farmer’s Market on the Bedford Highway, together with Lena Metlege Diab, Member of Parliament for Halifax West, to visit establishments along the way and discuss the renewed energy the area will see as locals and visitors return and reconnect. Minister Petitpas Taylor and MP Diab also took the opportunity to remind people they met that ACOA will accept applications for Rediscover Main Streets starting Monday, April 4, 2022. The Champions stream is open to a wide range of applicants, including: provincial governments, bodies, and boards Applicants can request between $1 million and $25 million in funding for eligible project expenditures, with cost-share ranging from 25 percent to 75 percent of total project costs depending on the recipient type. The maximum federal share for specific recipients is as follows: 25 percent for for-profit private sector businesses This intake has a two-stage application process: Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest to see if their project is eligible by March 25, 2022 Since its launch in 2018, the Low Carbon Economy Challenge (including the Champions stream) has supported approximately ninety projects with an investment of nearly $275 million. Hong Kong – Applications for funding from Elder Academy Development Foundation invited
The Committee on Elder Academy Development Foundation (EADF) is inviting a new round of funding applications from school-sponsoring bodies of primary and secondary schools as well as post-secondary institutions interested in setting up elder academies (EAs), and organisations interested in organising activities that encourage elderly learning and inter-generational harmony. Applications should reach the secretariat of the Committee on EADF by May 31.
The Elder Academy Scheme aims to promote continuous learning for elderly people, active ageing and inter-generational harmony. The EADF mainly provides funding for primary and secondary schools as well as post-secondary institutions to set up EAs to provide learning opportunities in a school setting for the elderly. Funding is also provided for activities that encourage elderly learning and inter-generational harmony.
Each approved EA in a primary or secondary school will be provided with funding of up to $122,000 for implementing a three-year programme. EAs which completed the first three-year programme may apply for funding of up to $60,000 for running a two-year programme.
As regards applications for organising EA courses in post-secondary institutions or other applications, the Committee on EADF will assess and decide the funding amount according to the merits of individual proposals.

Hong Kong – Applications invited for flag days in 2023-24
Charitable organisations wishing to hold flag days between April 2023 and March 2024 are invited to apply to the Social Welfare Department (SWD) between April 13 and May 12 this year.
To enable more organisations to solicit donations through flag sales, 27 flag days in 2023-24 will be assigned as regional flag days so that three organisations can sell flags concurrently on those days, one each on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and in the New Territories. There will be 28 territory-wide flag days to be held in the year.
An SWD spokesman said today (April 13) that applicant organisations must be bona-fide non-profit-making organisations exempt from tax under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance (Cap. 112) and, after their registration for tax exemption, have organised charitable activities in each of the past three years. Applicant organisations should refer to the eligibility criteria as detailed in the “Explanatory Notes for Application for Flag Days in 2023-24”.
“Flag day applications will be considered by the Lotteries Fund Advisory Committee according to factors including the organisation’s integrity and management capability; the nature, value and standard of its existing services; its financial need; and its ability to organise a flag day,” the spokesman said.
The application form for flag days together with the “Explanatory Notes for Application for Flag Days in 2023-24” can be downloaded from the SWD’s website at www.swd.gov.hk or obtained from the Lotteries Fund Projects Section of the SWD at Rooms 3601-02, 36/F, Dah Sing Financial Centre, 248 Queen’s Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, from today to 6pm on May 12 this year. Moreover, applications for flag days in 2023-24 can be submitted online. Please refer to the SWD’s website for application details.
The completed application form together with the required documents should reach the department at the above address by 6pm on May 12 this year. Late applications will not be considered.

City of Peterborough received up to $6.1 million for the Peterborough Organics Project to develop a centralized composting centre to divert food, leaf, and yard waste from landfills. This will prevent 32,000 tonnes of organic debris from entering the landfill each year.
Cowessess First Nation received over $630,000 for the Community Buildings Solar Project to install solar arrays on five community-owned buildings. This project is helping the community produce its own energy—displacing about 60 percent of its annual electricity consumption from the grid—while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Centre de Traitement de la Biomasse de la Montérégie received up to $3 million to install new equipment to convert organic and food waste into renewable energy and hygienic dried bio-fertilizer. Through this project, the Centre de Traitement de la Biomasse de la Montérégie is improving air and water quality in its community, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enriching local soil.
