Kaohsiung, Taiwan, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, marketed under the IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group Plc), is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, the group has announced that InterContinental Kaohsiung will be opened in the fourth quarter of this year. Set within the tallest luxury residence in Taiwan, InterContinental Kaohsiung is a luxury hotel created with innovation in mind. The 253 guest rooms will feature smart technology such as built-in voice control and other smart amenities. The hotel is expected to house five new restaurants and bars, a two-story banquet and meeting space, and a Club InterContinental Lounge. Robbert Manussen, an innovative thinker with ample management experience, has been appointed by the company to lead the Kaohsiung InterContinental team. Together, the team aims to redefine the luxury experience of “Living the InterContinental Life.”

Directly managed by IHG, this new addition to the iconic line of luxury InterContinental hotels is expected to open in Kaohsiung in the fourth quarter of this year. The hotel has garnered much attention for combining international luxury accommodations with the most sought-after of high-end residences. Following its launch, the hotel’s official Facebook fan page attracted thousands of followers in less than three days. Needless to say, InterContinental Kaohsiung has created quite the buzz. Located along a lush tree-lined boulevard in the heart of the Asia New Bay Area, the hotel will be adjacent to numerous Kaohsiung hot spots, such as the Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre, Pier 2 Art Centre, Kaohsiung Music Centre, Taiwan eSports League (TESL), Kaohsiung Public Library, and the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal, slated for completion next year. In addition to media reports predicting that international tech giants including Microsoft Taiwan, Cisco Taiwan, and Amazon AWS are to invest in the Asia New Bay Area, IHG is also optimistic in the development of Kaohsiung as a potential 5G AIoT smart city and has thus developed InterContinental Kaohsiung to be an innovative smart-luxury hotel. The hotel design is inspired by Kaohsiung’s harbour imagery and ocean backdrop, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all the world’s continents. The visual imagery evokes the mystery and abundance of the ocean, from its depths up to the horizon. The design of the hotel lobby, corridors, and public spaces reflect the lights and shadows of coastal waters to create a truly grand introduction to the accommodating InterContinental lifestyle. The hotel will offer 253 guest rooms replete with the brand’s classic Art Deco style and breath-taking views of the harbour and city. The guest rooms, which average 500 to 650 square feet in size, are equipped with Chinese, English, and Japanese digital voice control systems, Bose Bluetooth speakers, new generation Dyson Supersonic hair dryers, and child-friendly amenities. Prices are expected to start from NTD $6,800 (including buffet breakfast for two). The hotel’s public facilities include a swimming pool and gym, among other amenities and services. Catering reflects the spirit of the hotel with eco-friendly, sustainability-inspired dining featured in a lobby lounge, all-day dining, Chinese and Japanese restaurants, chef’s tables offering omakase dining, themed bars, a patisserie, business service and banquet hall. Guests staying in rooms or suites on the Club InterContinental Floor can also take advantage of the Club InterContinental Lounge.

Appointed by IHG to lead the InterContinental Kaohsiung team, the Dutch general manager, Robbert Manussen, has over 15 years of management experience in international hotel chains in various countries, including the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Austria, the UAE, Qatar, South Korea, and Vietnam. The grand openings of Waldorf Astoria and InterContinental Hanoi Landmark72 were both orchestrated under his expert leadership. The critically acclaimed InterContinental Hanoi Landmark72 has even become the recipient of numerous awards, including the World Luxury Hotel Awards, the Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards for Asia’s Best Luxury Business Hotel, the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, and the Readers’ Choice Awards by Condé Nast Traveler as Top 20 Best Hotels in Asia. As the general manager, Mr. Robbert Manussen indicates that he will continue to lead InterContinental Kaohsiung with innovation management in mind to embody IHG’s 75-year history of True Hospitality for Good and create excellent experiences for the guests in every detail.

The pandemic has changed the global travel and tourism sector. With “Living the InterContinental Life” as the core of the brand, InterContinental Kaohsiung will redefine “new luxury” by providing bespoke travel itineraries courtesy of InterContinental Hotels & Resorts’ extensive concierge service. Guests will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the city’s local culture and arts, explore hidden gems, and embark on a tour around friendly Kaohsiung. Taking note of Taiwan’s successful public health measures and the populace’s self-disciplined nature towards countering the coronavirus, Mr. Robbert Manussen strongly believes in Taiwan’s promising potential. In addition, InterContinental Kaohsiung is committed to the IHG Clean Promise to protect the health of every guest with rigorous cleaning procedures such as deep cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants and placing sanitizer stations at high contact points throughout the hotel. In order to remain up-to-date on epidemic issues, InterContinental Kaohsiung will also follow the advice of international health authorities, including the World Health Organization, US Centres for Disease Control & Prevention, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and local public health authorities. “I’d like to thank Taiwan for its efforts to combat the coronavirus. Let’s work together and impress the world with Kaohsiung’s eye-opening transformation,” said Mr. Robbert Manussen.
