The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels (Brussels ETO), together with the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, supported Hong Kong artist Wong Chi-yung in providing his art setup, “The Tower of Light – Croatia Edition”at the Visualia Festival of Light in Pula, Croatia, from September 17 to 19 (Pula time).

Speaking at the opening event on September 17, Assistant Representative of the Brussels ETO Mr Paul Leung highlighted that Hong Kong’s arts and cultural landscape has actually continued to thrive over the last few years, with the city securely developed as an East-meets-West centre for worldwide arts and cultural exchanges. He was really happy that the discussion of “The Tower of Light – Croatia Edition” in Pula showcased the imagination of Hong Kong’s artists and boosted the city’s impact in the European arts arena.

Mr Leung stated, “Over the past decade, Hong Kong’s art market has experienced significant growth, and we spare no effort in building Hong Kong into a world-leading arts trading hub. With our world-class cultural infrastructure and vibrant creative talent, Hong Kong is a unique place in the world where arts can flourish.”

He concluded by welcoming the audience to participate in the yearly celebration, Art March Hong Kong, which unites the international art neighborhood, consisting of prominent art fairs, galleries, museums, cultural organizations, collectors and imaginative specialists from all over the world, with occasions occurring throughout the city every March.

“The Tower of Light – Croatia Edition” was a site-responsive art setup that changed according to its environment. In daytime, the structure stood as a conceptual light tower, whereas in the evening, it transitioned into a luminescent setup. Through a choreography of light and darkness, it developed a sluggish, streaming rhythm motivated by water, welcoming audiences to assess the fragile interaction in between human existence, city area, and the natural world. For the Croatia edition, Wong drew motivation from the Adriatic Sea, integrating its currents, stillness and reflective surface area into the creative forecasts. The work therefore reacted to the maritime environment and cultural character of Pula.

The Visualia Festival of Light, established in 2013, is Croatia’s leading brand-new media art occasion, utilizing light to link ancient heritage with contemporary innovation. Held every year in Pula, it changes Roman historic ruins and contemporary commercial websites into an al fresco gallery, providing numerous setups and efficiencies which bring in over 15 000 visitors every year.
