Ashwani Kumar, an IPS Officer of the 1973 batch (Himachal Pradesh cadre) today took over as the Director of CBI. Shri Ashwani Kumar, who is the 24th Director of CBI after its formation in 1963, brings with him 35 years of experience in policing, particularly in Vigilance, CID besides six years of experience in CBI. Before joining as Director, CBI, Ashwani Kumar was Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh for over two years.

After assuming charge as Director, CBI, Ashwani Kumar spoke to the media and said that CBI which has history of 67 years is a professional organisation and it will strive to fulfill the task mandated to it. Talking about his priority, he said that every year CBI chalks out an Annual Programme of Work and accordingly it proceeds. "This year also the Annual Programme of Work has been decided on the first of January and accordingly CBI is carrying out the task set out", he said. The Director said that the motto of CBI, i.e., Industry, Impartiality and Integrity will be followed in letter and spirit and as the new Director he will strive to take the investigating agency to greater heights.

Later, Ashwani Kumar also addressed the senior officials at the CBI Headquarters. Stating that CBI's work is basically a team work, he sought the cooperation of every officer and staff in fulfilling the task of the premier investigating agency.

During his earlier tenure of six years in CBI, Shri Ashwani Kumar had worked as Joint Director (North) looking after the states of Punjab, Haryana, J&K, Rajasthan, UP and M.P. He also worked as Joint Director, Policy, Coordination and Interpol. Later, he was elevated to the rank of Additional Director and was given the charge of Anti-corruption Wing. While in the Himachal Pradesh Cadre, Shri Ashwani Kumar held the post of IG and DIG Vigilance, Shimla from 1995 till 2000. Before that he was DIG, CID and DIG Range, Shimla from 1991 onwards. He was the District Superintendent of Police in Shimla, Solan, Lahaul and Spiti. He also held the posts of Deputy Director and Assistant Director in the Special Protection Group, New Delhi from 1985 to 1990.

Shri Ashwani Kumar was awarded the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1989 and President's Police for Distinguished Service in 1999. He has also received Special Duty Medal with Bar for his services in 1979 and 1980 besides appreciation from the Prime Minister of India, Union Home Minister and the Minister of State (Personnel & Public Grievances).

Born on 15th November, 1950, Shri Kumar has visited several countries including Austria, Bermuda, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Switzerland, Syria, UK, USA, USSR, Vietnam etc. Shri Kumar holds Master's Degree in Business Administration, Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resources and Post Graduate Degree in Defence Studies. He has also attended the National Defence College, New Delhi in 1990.
