All of us have heard about gym for our body. We have never heard about one
for our brain? Here it is – “The Brain Gym”.

Can you mentally calculate the answer for 86, 54, 479 less 83% + 3048=?
within seconds, a la Shakuntala Devi? The skill you use to calculate with
logic is called computing skill. The process of doing the same without the
aid of any electronic device, i.e. using just the brain power is called
Mental Arithmetic. “Abacus” is a tool that helps to develop mental
arithmetic skills informed Mr. Dinesh Victor, Managing Director of SIP
Academy in India.

The Brain Gym and Abacus are the two internationally acclaimed Whole Brain
Development Programmes. Brought by SIP Academy India Pvt. Ltd., a Chennai
based Indian arm of SIP (Social Intellectual Progressive) Academy SDN BHD,
Malaysia.

It has been around in India for the past 10 years, in abroad for 15 years.
It has 67 centers in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Since its foray into the
state of Andhra Pradesh in the year 2003, it has trained more than 30,000
children. With 1200 centres in 18 countires, 19 states and 600 centres in
India and 1,85,000 children undergoing training, it is the most sought
after programme for intelligence building in children in India today.

In our daily lives, we see many children grumbling and complaining that how
much ever they study, they still lag behind in studies. The common
complaints are that they forget the answers or Mathematics is very
difficult subject. And mathematics form a very important part of students
curriculum. Using the Whole Brain Development Programmes which are widely
accepted in many countries like China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand one
can easily build intelligence in children in the age group of 6 to 12
years. Intelligence is nothing but the ability to gain and apply knowledge
and skills. Learning to compute numbers mentally promotes learning
ability, in other words, overall intelligence. That is what the SIP Abacus
and Brain Gym program are about, informed Mr. Dinesh Victor, Managing
Director of SIP Academy India Pvt. Ltd.

Adding further Mr. Dinesh said, the latest findings in the growing body of
medical research on early brain development reveal that social sensory
experiences during the early years have a direct effect on children’s
capacity to learn in the future. The findings confirm that early
interactions and experiences play a vital role in brain development. Our
programmes help in brain development in children, who are just beginning to
learn and discover. This is only possible by making both sides of the brain
to work, so that any major puzzle can be solved in seconds.

Aimed to holistic development of child’s brain by developing life long
skills in a child, Brain Gym developed by Dr. Paul Dennison of Edu-K of USA
and Abacus method from China have various exercises, which develop right
brain - left brain integration and whole brain activity.

This Abacus and Brain Gym program is a system of education that maximises
the potential of the child’s brain. This process develops *Kinesthetics *(touch
and feel); *Visualisation *(observations/retention and recalling) and *Auditory
Skills *(listening skill etc). This is a eight level program. Each
programmes is of 12 to 14 classes (around 3 months), once in a week for
about 2 hours 15 minutes.

These two activities benefit in better concentration, memory capability,
strong visualisation, creativity and arithmetic skills in a child. As a
result the child has an improved academic performance and sees learning as
a enjoyable activity. There is a mix of ambience, music, brain gym, Abacus
methodology and value education, which makes the learning a fun activity.

The course is scientifically tested and proven. For the last 25 years,
there have been several research papers presented worldwide on the benefits
of Abacus learning for children. Abacus was originally said to have been
propounded by Tetramachus of Greece. And later, it is noted that Alexander
the great had brought this methodology to Far East, when one of his
planners stayed back. For the last 2000 years, this skill has been used for
planning and executing logistics and technical projects in Far East. It was
said to be a basis for the computer algorithms, when the computers were
invented.
