Chennai, India, September 25, 2017: Scope e-Knowledge Center (Scope) is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed an ANSI/NISO standards compliant nanotechnology Knowledge Model (KM) for a global scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishing company. Additionally, the hierarchies in the cleansed KM were also enhanced.

The global publisher desired to build and maintain a KM (in the form of a thesaurus) to be used within a new nanotechnology database product. In essence, the client had a two-level term list (basic hierarchies), which they wanted to refine and expand further.

After analyzing the requirement, Scope took a two-phase approach. In the first phase, over 60,000 terms in the client’s existing KM were cleansed and enhanced. In the second phase, the hierarchies were expanded and synonyms for the terms in the cleansed and enhanced KM, which finally contained around 80,000 terms and 150,000 relationships, validated and added.

Scope leveraged its unique knowledge modeling process and in-house nanotechnology Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to execute this project. Considering the large size of the vocabulary and some unique challenges relating to polyhierarchies, lexical variants, and data standardization, Scope decided to deploy the Synaptica KMS platform, with a few specially added custom report generation features and functionalities.

Scope’s SMEs leveraged the Synaptica KMS platform to generate custom reports that help to handle the unique data level requirements of the customer including, label uniqueness, preservation of original labels, and traceability of deletions. Furthermore, the platform was used to validate the thesaurus based on standard validation rules and identify redundant hierarchical relations.

Backed by Scope’s proprietary knowledge repository of terms and concepts built over the years, Scope’s resident team of SMEs reviewed the output, refined and built the hierarchical relationships. Additionally, the services of industry and academic experts in nanotechnology were used to validate the knowledge model.

Besides enabling the global STM publisher to provide relevant and reliable information about nanomaterials and devices, Scope has:

• Created hierarchical access pattern and faceted navigation
• Addressed conceptual duplicates within the existing KM
• Enabled high precision and recall of search results
• Expanded hierarchies without affecting the customer’s data requirements
